Forum Configuration


The forum settings panel is the main controls of your forum, these are the important settings that govern how your forum runs, they can make minor aesthetic changes to file-system changes, so be very careful what you touch as it may cause your forum to go offline, but don't worry the support community will be at hand to help you resolve any trouble or explain features in more detail than this document does. To set any of the changes below into action, click the "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

Maintenance Settings

Maintenance Mode

Maintenance mode, is when you place your forum offline, leaving nothing online but a message to the users about whats happening, it will allow administrators to log in and deal with the problem or to work without the chance of anyone causing a problem while its happening. This is particularly useful if you have to do a mass prune of topics or do any of the maintenance controls and can even be useful if your just generally wanting to try features without general users seeing a breakage.

To turn on Maintenance Mode, just tick the little box next to "Maintenance Mode?" If you wish, you can edit the text just under it, this text is what the users will be presented with along with a login box for administrators to log in. To confirm maintenance mode, click save at the bottom of the page, and YaBB will shut itself down from normal users that are under the rank of Administrator.

General Settings

Message Board Name

Your message board name is one of the most vital things on your forum, it keeps your forum unique from all the others and helps visitors identify your forum, its in the title, the footer of the page and in every topic and message listing, so to make it best, name your forum something unique like "Bob's Music Forum" instead of "forum" so that it gives maximum impact, to set your forums name, just type it in the box next to "Message Board Name".

Forum Start Date

You can set the time and date your forum started, this may be useful if you have converted and the converter couldnt find the data for this, the forum start date will be used in calculations round the forum for times and values. Another use may be if you had your forum hidden for a while and then launched it, you may with to set the time that you launched instead of when you started building your forum. In the box opposite you can specify the date and time. It follows the format of short dates, so first the month "01" then put a slash in "/" then enter the day "25", add a slash "/" and finally enter the year "05". Next the time needs added, place in a space " " and then enter the hour (in 24 hour format) "12" followed by a colon ":" then the minute "45" and another colon ":" and finally add the second "55".

Select Menu Style

Your YaBB menu and buttons through your pages, can look different depending on how you want it, the "Buttons only" is the default and that puts full images there for each of the features that you can goto these do use more bandwidth but also look more pleasing to the eye, "Text Only" provides a very basic text link, it will have the features name as a hyperlink, the final setting "Icon + Text" is the old YaBB SP 1.4 Style, it will have a very small icon next to the text this is visually appealing and useful to people who dont want graphics at the same time. To set what menu you see, pick one from the drop down list.

Show view profile button under post

YaBB users can fill out profiles with information about themselfs, to view this data you can either click on their name or by using the "Profile Button", this setting in the admin panel allows you to add a button just under the users signature that says "Profile" and when clicked will goto the relevant users profile. Just a small UI tweak but its up to you, tick the box to enable.

Show Latest Member on Board Index

This setting allows you to choose wheter or not, you want in your forum stats area the lastest registered member. Its just another UI tweak but can be nice for not so busy forums, it lets the community see of new members and may make them feel slightly more welcome. " The newest member is YaBB Administrator." Just tick the box to enable.

Registration and Member Settings

Disable guest access?

Selecting this option closes your forum from guests. Visitors will now see a message requesting them to register.

Enable Guest Posting?

Selecting this option enables the possiblity for everyone to post into your forum. Note that in order to work properly this setting must not be in conflict with the "Disable guest access" setting as well as with the board specific permissions.

Default Length for login cookies to last

You may set an default option for users to stay logged in. Users will see a similar drop-down in the log in screen. This function replaces the old "Minutes to stay logged in" function in YaBB 1 series.

Cookie Name - Username

Sets the name of the username cookie. Name it as you wish.

Cookie Name - Password

Sets the name of the password cookie. Name it as you wish.

Cookie Name - Session

Sets the name of session cookie. Name it as you wish.

Disable user registration (only admin can register)?

Selecting this option, only the administrator(s) of the forum can create new user accounts.

Show and require agreement letter when registering?

Selecting this option shows the terms of agreement text in the registering page.

Use Pre-registration and account activation

With pre-registration on, users need to activate their account after registering and before they can log in the first time. You can check the status of registrars in Admin panel | Forum Stats | Registration Log. When an account is being created, an email is sent to the address used for registering. The email contains an activation link through which the account is activated. If activation is not done during the time span given "Max time span for users to activate their account hours", the account is disabled and a new account needs to created in order for the person in question to enter the forum.

The time span in which the pre-registered account has to be activated.

Enable Members to Select Profile Avatars?

Selecting disabled the avatars for all users.

Allow Email Notification?

Selecting this allows email notifications for new posts and personal messages.

Allow users to hide their e-mail from public (except admin)?

Selecting this hides the email link/button in posts. Administrator's email will however remain visible.

Userpic Width (0 = disable limit)

The maximum width for avatar resizing.

Userpic Height (0 = disable limit)

The maximum height for avatar resizing.

Maximum allowed characters in signatures

Set how many characters are allowed to used in signatures. Note that all used characters count, including YaBBC tags!

Minimum time between two postings from the same IP (in seconds)

Sets the shortest possible time needed for a user to post in a row.

Select default language

Sets the default language for new users. This does not change the existing users' language.

Select the default forum template

Sets the default template set for new users. This does not change the existing users' template set.

Advanced Settings and Preferences

This page allows you to change the new feature's settings for your YaBB forum. Be very careful with these settings, as they may render your YaBB dysfunctional. Also note that some of these options are default options for guests only (such as time format).



In-Thread Multi Delete

Enable Multi Delete for

Choose who should be able to use the multi-delete function (remove multiple topics at once).

Do not use the Recycle Bin for messages deleted by Administrators

You can also set not to use the Recycle Bin for messages deleted by administrators (assuming you have set one of the boards to be a Recycle Bin).

Polls

Number of Poll Options

This sets the maximum number of definable options when users create polls.

Maximum number of Characters in a Poll Question

Limit the number of characters in poll titles.

Maximum number of Characters in a Poll Option

Limit the number of characters in each option.

Maximum number of Characters in a Poll Comment

Limit the number of characters in each poll comment. The value 0 disables commenting (disabled by default)

Allow users to add polls to existing threads

Choose whether or not users can add polls to existing conversations. If this is disabled, polls must be started as a new thread.

Allow UBBC tags and Smilies in Polls

If disabled, removes the ability to use UBBC code and smilies in polls. This does not apply to the thread attached to the poll.



Advanced Personal Message Box

Number Of Posts Required to send Personal Messages?

Specify the number of posts a member must make before personal messaging is activated. 0 to disable.

Spam Protect - Enter Percent

Enable Personal Message Limits?

If checked, the following controls come into effect:

Maximum Messages in Outbox

Specifies the maximum number of messages in each user's PM outbox, after which old messages are deleted.

Maximum Messages in Inbox

Specifies the maximum number of messages in each user's PM inbox, after which old messages are deleted.

Maximum Messages in Storage

Specifies the maximum number of messages that each user can "store". PM storage is essentially an archive function. If the number of stored messages exceeds the maximum, old messages are automatically deleted.

Want to send new users a welcome PM?

If selected, users are automatically sent a PM upon registration. If checked, the following options can be configured.

Send to new user from following account name

Specifies which user the automatic PM is sent from. Default should be admin, although this could be any user, such as a global moderator.

Enter the PM Subject here

The subject of the automatic PM.

Enter the PM Text here

The body of the automatic PM.



Topic Summary Cutter

Reverse Topic Summaries? (So latest post is at top)

Reverses the order of threads on the index, so the most recent thread to appears at the top of the index.

How many posts in topic summary?

Edit the number of threads that appear on the index. If the number of topics in one board exceeds this number, then they will be truncated to another page.



Time Lock

Limit time allowed to modify posts?

If checked, limits the time that users have to modify their posts.

Time limit for modifying posts (in days)

Specifies the time limit for users to modify their posts. (The modify limit must be enabled)

Limit time allowed to delete posts?

If checked, limits the time that users have to delete their posts.

Time limit for deleting posts (in days)

Specifies the time limit for users to delete their posts. (The delete limit must be enabled)

Disable 'Last Edit' message for edits prior to time limit below

If checked, the 'Last Edit' message will not appear when modifying posts before the set time limit.

Time limit to modify posts without 'Last Edit' message (in minutes)

Specifies the time span where the 'Last Edit' message will not appear when modifying posts. (The 'Last Edit' limit must be enabled)



File Attachments

File Rename/Overwrite

Defines the action taken when an attachment is added with the same name as an existing attachment. The options are Auto Rename (attachment is uploaded with a modified name), Overwrite existing (remove the existing attachment and upload the new one), and Do not upload (stops attachments being uploaded if they share a name with an existing attachment).

File size limit for attachments in KB

Limit the size of attachments, in KB. 0 to disable.

Attachment directory size limit in KB

Limit the maximum size for the attachments directory, in KB. 0 to disable.

Allowed file extensions for attachments (ex: 'jpg gif bmp')

Only allow certain file extensions to be uploaded. Simply type in the extension suffix, with spaces separating them (jpg gif zip etc.)

Enable file extension check?

If unchecked, then all files are permitted to be uploaded, regardless of whether or not they have an extension that is not in the 'Allowed file extensions' list. Use with caution.

Display picture attachments in posts?

If checked, then picture attachments are displayed under the post without having to click on the attachment link.

Allow file attaching in posts?

If unchecked, then all attachments are disabled.

Allow guests to upload attachments?

If guests are allowed to post on your forum, this option allows guests to add attachments to their posts.



Error Logger

Enable Error Logging

Specify whether errors in the YaBB engine will be logged.

Allow for log rotation

Specify whether logs will be overwritten after a certain number of entries. This stops the log file from growing too large.

Number of entries before log rotation

If log rotation is enabled, specify the number of entries in the log file before the log is rotated.



Path Settings

You should not change these settings unless your domain name or folder configuration changes, or you did not set up the YaBB paths correctly at setup.

Absolute Path

Displays the absolute path to your YaBB forum for troubleshooting purposes.
