Catergories/BoardIndex Mainpage do not show

To enable catergories to show, you must add a board, for users to see catergories ! Then to enable them, first go to Admin centre -> Categories -> Select the appropriate categories -> Hit 'Go'Here,For each of the categories, make sure that NO member groups are selected in the 'Allowed to View/See Category:' box. Note that there is an important difference between selecting every group in here, and selecting none. By selecting every group, all members of the forum will be able to see the category, but guests will not. By making sure no groups are selected, everyone, including guests will see the category. To select multiple groups, or to deselect the last one, hold down the control (or apple) key on your keyboard while clicking on the groups. This allows you to toggle selection on/off. Once all groups are deselected, hit 'Save' This procedure will make the categories accessible.

Note that on the 'Edit Boards' page, there is a checkbox labeled 'Show to all?'. This is not a permission-overruler. What this box does is to show the board on the boardindex page, even if you don't have the right to view topics in it. However, while visible on the board index, you still cannot enter the board if you don't have the 'view topics' permission. This feature is only used to show people that there exist a board they cannot access, not to let everyone in regardless of permissions. Also, this feature only works if the user (or guest) is allowed to access the category where the board is located.

Why Can't Guests See My Boards?

This is usually because you have restricted your boards to one or more member groups.

However, since YaBB 2 supports board level permissions as well, you might need to check/set these too if the above is not enough. To do this, go to Admin Centre -> Boards -> Check all the boards in the appropriate categories -> hit 'Go' Here, you'll need to make sure that no groups in the 'Allowed to view topics:' box is selected. Deselect them as explained for the categories above. The other three group boxes isn't important when it comes to viewing the board, but if guests are to be able to post in the board (Providing guest posting is allowed), you should follow the same procedure with the 'start topics', 'Reply to topics', and possibly create polls as well. Once the appropriate lists have no selected groups in them, hit 'save'.

Also NOTE that selecting Gender (or age) as a requirement to view a Cat or Board will prevent anyone (Guests) included, due to not selecting or filling out their profile stipulating Gender.

How Do I De-Select Everything In A Listbox?

In order to de-select all options within a list or selection box, you need to first select a single item within that box.  Then, hold down the Ctrl key (or the Apple key if you are using a Macintosh) on your keyboard while clicking on that same item again.  This will un-highlight (de-select) the item
Note: de-selecting ALL membergroups allows ALL (including Guests) permission. (eg. Post/Reply/View/Start)
Selecting ALL membergroups allows permission to ALL membergroups (NOT Guests).

Video Tutorial - How to Add a New Category

Please read this before watching the video.

Note: A category will not be visible on your forum until you add at least one board into it.  For purposes of this tutorial, all we will do is create the category.

The video starts on the main page (the Board Index) with the Administrator logged in.  To make a new Category, you click on the Admin tab on the main menu to go to the Admin Center.  From there, you go to the Forum Controls section and select Categories.  You see the Manage Categories screen.

To add a Category, change the default number (3) in the box to the right of the words "Add Categories:" to a 1, then click the Add button.  This brings you to the Add/Edit Categories screen.

Assign a new and unique Category ID to your category, and give it a name.  Note no spaces/special characters in the Category ID, but they can be in the Category name.

Next choose the groups you want to be able to view this category.  In the example video, several different choice options are illustrated.

Finally, check the box if you want those who can see this category to have the ability to "collapse" it.  The effect of this option is shown after the catagory is saved and tested from the Board Index.  The collapse feature will be demonstrated at the end of the How to Add a Board tutorial.

The video file takes a while to load.  Please be patient.

Video Tutorial - How to Add a New Board

Please read before watching the video.

Note: This video shows how to make a board and place it in a category.  Making the category used in this video is covered in a previous tutorial How to Add a Category.  For purposes of this tutorial, no Moderator will be assigned to the Board, the only option used will be to allow attachments, and no user permissions will be used.

The video starts on the main page (the Board Index) with the Administrator logged in.  Notice Category Number Three has two boards - Board Number 5 and Board Number 6.  To make a new Board, you click on the Admin tab on the main menu to go to the Admin Center.  From there, you go to the Forum Controls section and select Boards.  You see the Manage Boards screen.

To add a Board, change the default number (3) in the box to the right of the words "Add Boards:" to a 1, then click the Add button.  This brings you to the Add Boards screen.

Assign a new and unique Board ID to your Board, then give it a Board Name.  We will use bd4 for the Board ID, and Board Number 4 for the Board Name.  Note no spaces/special characters in the Board ID, but they can be in the Board Name.  Type a description for the Board.

Since we are skipping the Moderator assignments, Select which existing Category you wish to place this new Board in.  For this tutorial, we will add Board 4 to Category Number Three.

Check any options and set any User Permissions (we will only check Allow Attachments in this tutorial).  Next set any Group permissions.  For this tutorial we will set the Group Permissions so that only members may start a topic, reply to a topic, or start a poll.  Everyone, Guests included, may view the topic.  We click on the top item, scroll to the bottom, then hold the Shift key when clicking on the bottom item to highlight the entire list at once.

Next we will save and go back to the Manage Board change and see our new Board in Category Number Three.  Notice it is out of numerical sequence with Board 5 and 6.  We will click on the icon to reorder boards in a category, select Board 4 and click twice on the "Up" button.  Then we return to the Manage Boards screen and notice the boards are in the order we desire.

We will return to the main forum page (the Board Index) and see that Board Number 4 is now present.  Finally, we will demonstrate how the "collapse Category" feature works by collapsing and un-collapsing Category Number Three.

The video file takes a while to load.  Please be patient.

NOTE:  Controlling viewing access has to do with the membergroup selections made in Cats and Boards.  Selecting a membergroup "allows" that group.  NOT selecting any member group allows all (Guests included).

See the Cats and Boards tutorials above.
