Ah... the not so great old days.  Email using Pine, FTP the only worthwhile way to d/l, Gopher, newsgroups,  Telnet.  Protocols like VT52 and VT100.  BBS software like Carina II, FoReM, PCBoard, RBBS, Wildcat, and WWIV.  2400 baud modems and 65 megabyte RLL hard drives were god-fearing.  And all this was before the WWW... the Web came into existence in 1992.  The Internet was here long before the Web.

True, the first several years ('92 thru '96) of the WWW was the frontier of the "early adopters"... it took a little while for business and the general public to catch on.

Ahh yes, I remember using the old 2400 baud modems and the amount of sites available to us back then.  Everyone was afraid that the world knew what they were doing and could see everything on their computers, looking back on it now I believe there is more reason for concern now then there was then..  Makes me wonder though what was going on in the minds of the guys at UCLA, Stanford Research Institute, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Utah when they connected their PC's together for the first time back in 1969.  Hmm, Ooops Just a bit off track there.

The World Wide Web.  I really can't remember when I noticed it but I was thinking it was around before 1992.  Never the less it boomed with popularity and developed into what we have today rather quickily don't you think?

// me from Switzerland

I found out about.... I..... *rmhrmh* well I.. dunno ^^I knew it was there but I used phpBB, besically .. i dunno. The over-simple look of some Yabb1 Fora propably lend me to think its not a cool software - glad i can now say I wont go back anymore *gggg*

Then I dished it because I wanted subfora - long story short i decided to try Yabb2 RC-#

Which .. is the best I've had so far *ggg* So I am now lokking in the forum here for thos little things you want to have polished in the forum (larger avatars, forums in a subforum)

From Coventry, UK

Found YaBB, shortly after losing my Proboards board (aparently after violating ToS), when searching for a free message board host, but when i discovered i could host one myself, and even without haivng to invest in an SQL server, i was even more happy. So installed Yabb 1 Gold 1.4 and shortly upgraded to 2 RC 2, thn RC 3 etc.

Love the software, and the support is great on this forum!

I'm from New York.

I found YaBB while searching for free BBS software.

I used to run the message board for the NY Yankees baseball team.

I was reading above about 2400 baud modems.

Actually, I have been online since 1984 and started with a 300 baud modem. It was all text-based then.

I started with an Atari 800 computer and no hard drive. It used cartridges and cassette tape for storage. When the 5-1/2" floppies came out, it was unbelievable.

Things have changed a bit since then, huh?  Wink

But it doesn't mean all of it is better. I still think some of the old Atari games are the best.

Hi everyone,

I am from Windhoek, Namibia, Africa .... I really love this forum and can't wait for 2 to be finished. I have a couple of questions.... I know I should probably not post it here, but I don't know where else...

BTW feel free to have a look at my forum ..... http://www.davincis.com.na/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi

Will it be difficult to convert mine to  YaBB2 ??? would really love to hear some feedback.

Or can you point me in the right direction of where I should post this?

? no.1

I have searched and searched, but can't get extra smilies to work. I am using 1 Gold - SP 1.4 and use boardmod to change the files .... Obviously I am doing it wrong, but my other mods are working.

Then ? no.2

Where it says on top, Hey, GuyFromAfrica, you have 0 messages.
is there a way to get it to say Hey, GuyFromAfrica, you have 2 messages, 1 are new. ... ?

Then ? no.3

Some of my posts dissapear, but on the board it said that someone posted. When I post again it will suddenly appear. This happen when it nears the 15 mark for a new page. Ever heard of it. 2 of my users informed me of this.

Then ? no.4

Is there a sorta real-time chat that goes with YaBB?

Then I just want to say that this is the best forum I have ever used..... WELL DONE!!!! can't wait for the final release of YaBB2 !!!!!

I live in Southampton, UK (where Henry V set sail from to France before the famous Battle of Agincourt).

I found out about Yabb through a search engine search for free forum software, which we are reviewing with a view to maybe adding user interactivity to our own web site. Though as it's a professional business site, it looks unlikely that we will bother.

None the less, I was impressed with the ease with which Yabb2 could be installed - though the documentation was suitably naff and the setup.pl program got very confused when run subsequently (it wasn't obvious how to access the ADMIN facilities).

From Liverpool UK (the home of the Beatles)!

Found YaBB whilst looking for forum based software - not sure where I found the link.

Tried it, liked it!

1) Ask on BoardMod.
2) It's a mod from BoardMod.
3) No idea.
4) Nope.

Do not PM me for support.
