Not as described.  Most search engines (like Google) match whole words, not partial words, which is why I asked what I did.

On the other hand, this is easily resolved with a checkbox: "match whole words only" - when checked, "Doe" will match only "John Doe" and "Jane Doe," but when unchecked would also match "James Doeson."

Cepheid, for a human-friendly experience and to ensure records appear on the list, searching the Members directory with "Doe" should list "John Doe", "Jane Doe", and "James Doeson".  Thus, the internal search codes within the ML source code should be equivalent to using "doe*".  If the user is search savvy, then they can use "“John Doe”" (within quotes) to find only "John Doe".  The vast majority of members will simply enter "Doe" and press the search button.

This modification request to the PM and Member search method would make them similar to the majority of search engines people are accustomed to already.  Once updated, it would alleviate user support messages from members regarding "not finding members" in the Member directory.

These features need to be reengineered to allow wildcards by default within the ml source code.

I agree entirely with this.  However, would you also want "John Doeson" to show up, since "Doe" is contained within?  Or do you want the search term to be a whole word only unless a wildcard is used (i.e. "Doe" finds "John Doe" and "Jane Doe," but NOT "John Doeson" ... while "Doe*" would find all three) ?

The PM and Members search features are not human friendly, since there are many users who do not know what wildcards are.  These features need to be reengineered to allow wildcards by default within the ml source code.  Thus, when a member searches for "Doe", both "John Doe" and "Jane Doe" appear on the Member list.

As always, keep up the great work on this forum software.

In the popup boxes that let you search for names there is this:

What if it was modified as

This is a minor fix (and assuming it works, just a text file change) to an existing feature and should be included as a bug fix.

You might want to add a little note explaining that wildcards are accepted.

Well, that works.  You might want to add a little note explaining that wildcards are accepted... it certainly wasn't clear to me.

Thanks.

No partial match in PM recipient search

I just tried sending PMs to some people who have long display names, and noticed that the PM recipient search will not return any partial matches, but only complete matches.  For example, if I want to send a PM to Captain John, I search for "captain" ... and only users "Captain" and "captain" come up, but "Captain John" does not... I have to search for the full username to get it to come up.

There should be a checkbox to allow search to include partial matches, whether that means "begins with" or "contains" (or, ideally, allowing the user to select between the two).  If no checkbox is given (the current situation), search should default to matching on partials.
