Somewhat related, but FOR INFO ONLY:

Just today I got an email from my company's email gurus giving us a "spam problem update."  During the last calendar week, they handled X bazillion emails, etc. but the important numbers are these:

Percent of emails blocked as spam: 94.3
Percent not blocked: 5.7

This is the 5th largest provider in the U.S., and they are documenting that less than 6% of emails are actually valid emails.  Bear in mind that of that 5.7 that was allowed through, people call all day long complaining that not enough of them are blocked.

So the industry "experts" are up against the wall on this.  They must do something or be seen as not reacting to customer wants and needs.  The suggestions they are considering are horrendous, IMO.  One proposal is to auto block ANYTHING from the same source that occurs more than twice per day.  So long, notifications.

Outgoing email is also falling under closer scrutiny.  A proposal for that is to block EVERY email containing a link.  That's ridiculous... but the spam problem is the squeeking wheel, and people sending innocent links such as to their site or forum are making no noise because their mail isn't blocked... yet!

I am not trying to say anything generated by YaBB is spam, let's be clear on that.  All I am trying to do is give you information that the telecom industry is under a lot of fire right now because of spam, and the pressure is on them to fix it before someone like - say - the government steps in and does it for them.  So don't expect them to be very selective in sorting out good or valid emails from spam.  Expect this to get worse.

Forum owner wouldn't get in trouble if the e-mail is sent  to that friend using the e-mail that of that user/member that is sending the e-mail. Basically instead of the e-mail being from the forums default e-mail address it would be from the member's e-mail.

Of course, I can't code so I don't know how much of a pain in the butt this would be. either way I don't see it being a problem. Much better getting message board spam in your inbox than viagra spam Grin

I can see this being abused, though, and then the forum owner is on the hook for spam.  It should be limited to only X invites per Y hours per user, I think.

Also, I don't think this should be on every page... there's no reason to clutter the interface.  There could be a link on every page to "Invite a friend," and that page is where you select the email... but I wouldn't put extra text fields on every page for this.  The interface is already quite busy.

We have a feature that allows sending topic links to friends.. Why not a simple feature via a small text input field on pages that allow for inviting friends to the forum in general.  Just put in their email address and click Invite.  It will search the member list for them to see if they already exist.  If they don't, it'll send them an invitation email.
