YaBB On-Off Icons on Main Listings

Dear friends,

The current On-Off icons which signify a new message in a forum section that are displayed on the forum's main page after a user logs into the system needs to be more functional and aesthetically pleasing.  Currently, the left icons do nothing for either registered users or not, and the logged-in user must rely on the blinking icons to determine whether there are new messages.

I recommend to simplify this method by removing the blinking icons altogether to reduce clutter, and having the icons on the left column to determine if there is a new message in the forum section.

I've included an image of the "On-Off" (new message/no message) below, for example, the third forum section has "new messages".  This addition will make the forum main listing much clearer to users.

Thank you and keep up the good work on this great community forum software.

Lots of users do not use the default Category images (folders), they replace them with images to match the Categories theme

Yes, that's correct.  It is a nice feature to allow administrators to choose the icon image next to the forum description.  However, this simply displays an icon and the user must be given another set of blinking icons next to the Forum Title to decipher whether new messages are present in the forums.

I believe the left column on the main forum listing where these icons appear needs to be more functional and aesthetically pleasing.  When a user logs in, the left column should have either the "on" or "off" icons which the administrator should have the option of adding the two (2) icons when creating forums in the administrative menu.  Thus, the user can instantly tell whether there are new messages in a particular forum.

I've included an image of the "On-Off" (new message/no message) below, for example, the third forum section has "new messages".  This addition will make the forum main listing much clearer to users.

But .... your example is noticeable and direct ... what happens now for users who want and use different icons to show Cat content ?  They would be forced to use 2 different icons (other than the simple default folder icons) for content (no new messages) and content with New messages.
Using separate images for content and No an New Messages gives Admin's more choices.  Even to using attention grabbing icons for No and New messages, rather than the default tiny blinking buttons.
How about a traffic signal icon for No and New messages ?  Red light No New Messages, Green light "New", the option for the No/New are endless, without eliminating the Cat Content Icon.

See capture of a YaBB Forum ... Admin even has eliminated the No?New icons, states anyone can see if New messages are posted under "Last Post"

They can continue to use the same icons of their choice.  By giving them the option of an "New" and "No New" message option in the Category section, the section becomes more functional.  If the administrator doesn't like these benefits, he can name both the 2 sets of images for the category with the same name.

I believe those tiny icons clutter the category title area.   However, tiny "New" or "No Message" icons for future subforums would be a good idea.

I am not suggesting to eliminate the Category content icon.  I am requesting that section to be more functional and aesthetically pleasing.

In the example you provided, the administrator will have the option of two (2) images per category.  If this feature would be added to the software, the following attached image would be how the category icons would display "New" or "No New Messages".  As you can see, I've used color icons to signify "New" messages, and greyscale to signify "No New Messages".  The administrator would actually have more creative options available and the main listing would become clearer.

I was just about to suggest the same thing - especially with the greyscale icons VS colour icons.

However, with some forum colour schemes greyscale images might look out of place ... so perhaps there should be an option to remove the new post notification option, whereby the forum would default to using greyscale images for each "folder" ... but give an option for the user to supply their own "off" image so that people who want to customise their forum colours can also customise the "off" images to colours that suite their scheme.

Alternatively (to save lots of graphics scripts to convert images to greyscale) - when a user selects the option to remove the on-off notification, the default folder graphics would revert to a colour / greyscale image for on / off respectively, and if a user want's to add a custom graphic, they must provide both the "on" and "off" graphics at the same time.

Graphics tweaking can be done by anyone now as there are a few free graphics packages out there now - GIMP is quite good once you get used to it Smiley
