Permission denied - unable to open
I get this message when clicking on a message
Unable to open ./Messages/1280259288.ctb
Verbose: Permission denied

I checked the file 1280259288.ctb and using FileZilla and it has attributes 644. Also the file 1280259288.ctb has 644

I tried changing both to 755 just to see if that helped to no avail.

What can I check next?

I had the server crash sometime ago and some files were corrupted (the files had just nulls instead of text).

Re: Permission denied - unable to open
Does the folder (Messages) have a 755 CHMOD ?  Are the User/Group correct for this folder ?   Have you run the Maintenance functions in Admin Center ?

Re: Permission denied - unable to open
Messages has 755.

When I run Rebuild indexes I get
Unable to open ./Messages/-55826513002.ctb
Verbose: Permission denied

All "Rebuild" return similar errors. Ie. Rebuild members I get:
Unable to open ./Members/membercalc.txt.rebuild
Verbose: Permission denied

Re: Permission denied - unable to open
What version you running? Do you still have "zero'd" files ?, they must be removed or overwritten with your message backup files.

Re: Permission denied - unable to open
I deleted all ctb and txt files from Messages.

No I get: Unable to open ./Boards/general.txt
Verbose: Permission denied

I am not able to do just about anything. Any maintenance or anything else. What files I need to delete to get back to some working state.

Re: Permission denied - unable to open
I do not have a backup - or I think my backup is from the corrupted state. Domain does not do a backup.

What I am now looking is just to start from clean slate (users data preserverd, though). I'll return the messages by hand but currently I cannot do that: I get the "Unable to open/Permission denied" to just about anything, deleting a message, adding a message, etc.

A few weeks back all was ok. The server had crashed, some messages were zero, but others were ok. I think some Admin operation could have rendered some data file corrupt and prevented futher operation.

Re: Permission denied - unable to open [Solved]
OK. I managed to fix all problems. The installation guide says one should use chmod  755 on many files/directory permission but I changed it to 777 as suggested here elsewhere. That solved all the "Unable to open/Permission denied" problems in my case. I also deleted the zeroed files and ran maintenance.

Thank you for you time and help.

Re: Permission denied - unable to open
Great ... it is rare, but for some reasons unknown, a host server will require 777 to enable scripts to run.  Glad you found it.
