OK - Happy Holidays and Good Luck

If you run into XAMPP installation problems you will find me on the XAMPP Support Forum (just like here) as well other good folks like Altrea, Wole, Nobbie and Sharlie (sounds promising, eh?).

See ya!

Ah, right. Actually, thinking about it, it might have even been WAMP that I installed on my PC.

Mac's actually have Apache installed by default (though I think it's usually out of date), but that XAMPP seems pretty perfect - saves installing everything separately.

he he. To be honest, I'm on the old Strongbow most days - can't drink Guiness anymore 'cause I'm vegan. Embarrassed But, yeah, just as soon as the snow has cleared, I'll be on my way. Smiley

Serek= JonB typing too fast

I geek out over there like I do here, LOL.

Thanks for that Jon - Nice useful site!. I'd actually installed XAMPP going back a few years on my PC, but had no idea it included Perl (I must have missed the last 'P').

Installed it on my Mac (so had to follow their instructions) which I think is probably even easier. It should save me a bit of time and precious bandwidth.

Serek is right on, and here is a simple guide to do it:

http://bravo.newnetenterprises.com/wordpress/xampp/the-10-minute-basic-xampp-ins...

and a guide to installing YABB afterward...

both 10 minute Installations

Cool

Actually, to the best of my knowledge, if you wanted to keep a YaBB forum for 'nostalgia' sake, then I'm pretty sure that you could install Perl locally and run it with Apache or IIS on your own computer - in the exact same way that you can run PHP from your computer.

I keep meaning to check this out myself for my own reasons - JonB is the best guy around here to tell you about things like this, and I'm pretty sure that he even has a website dedicated to these things... Maybe he'll be around soon to explain further...

As a backup, yes .... useable from disk ... No
In order to run, must be on a server, using a server OS and Perl.

Your forum can be upgraded ... simply install a New forum, get it setup and running, then convert the old forum to the new version.
  Members/Messages/Boards would all be there.

Hello YaBB community,

I am still using a heavily modded YaBB SP Gold 1.1 and have been using it since October 28, 2001  Cool

The forum is still solid, but alas, it may be time to retire it. Problem is, there are many threads that my friends and I would like to keep, for nostalgia.

Is it possible to save a working forum to disk?

I am happy to see that this community is still active.
