Notice something different?
If you have not noticed over the past month or two, there have been several new and exciting features added to the forum here.  This is part of the development of the next version of YaBB.  Our largest hurdle other than the few developers having little time is getting MySQL implemented in the existing code.

I'm not going to list the features out but you'll see drastic design and functionality improvements.  I'll let everyone find them on their own.  Tell us what you think!

Re: Notice something different?
The amount of javascript seems to have increased. Is this necessary?

Will it be possible to integrate (almost) any RDBMS, or will the new version be MySQL-only?

Re: Notice something different?
The idea behind all the Ajax/Javascript usage is to make the forum more intuitive, more fun, faster, and use less bandwidth and server resources. Because you are not loading full pages for every action now, things happen much quicker, don't request as much from the server, and save the host on bandwidth.  Many of these features can be disabled to revert it to the way things were.

As far as the database support goes, the original rewrite that YaBB has tried to do for years was intended to support any type of database you write a "driver" module for.  With the new focus of continuing with the original code base, I'm not sure how it will start out.  Most likely, it will still function in this way because we play to put the MySQL calls in its own module with the main source code calling that.  This means once other modules are written, a simple variable can tell YaBB to call that module instead for its specific read/write procedures.  Our biggest struggle is developers having time to take this task on.

There is almost no way to visit a website today without using javascript. But everything I've implemented with javascript and ajax should still work if it is turned off.

Glad you like it. Although I just realized on a mobile it is completely worthless  Cheesy

Don't forget to check out the messageindex dropdowns and subboard drop downs for more ease of use.

Re: Notice something different?
We now have a working MySQL version of the code you see running here (this forum is currently still using the flat files which are slow on SourceForge's server).  We have made a large step towards YaBB 3 and moving YaBB forward to meet today's demands.  It will still take a while to optimize the code to take advantage of the database, get the last few files into a database tables, and finalize the text encoding method to be used.  However, we now have a fully functional database-supported YaBB without sacrificing any old or newly added features.

Don't know about anything different, new member! Tongue
Can't seem to get onto the YaBB codex to help sort out my concerns, though. Keep getting this:

Re: Notice something different?
Hey, I really like the new features and design around here lately. I noticed on the bottom copyright that the software has been upgraded from YaBB Next Edition to YaBB 3.0 Beta Forum Software (even if it still says running: YaBB Next Edition on the top right).

These are great moves ahead! I'm looking forward to upgrading my forum and being able to use MySQL database!
