From Windows to Linux server..

Hey folks,

I'm running a 2.4 board on a Windows server currently.
For quite some time, I've wanted to move it to a virtual *nix box..
But I run into the same problem every, time I've tried this.
case-sensitivity..

Example:
UserA is a registered user
UserA logs in as "usera" and posts a message
UserA now logs in as "UserA" and posts another message

On the Windows server, no problem.
After moving the forum to a *nix server, the posts by "usera" will be displayed as posted by a ex-member.

Is there any way around this?

that's odd, because I thought we had an error trap against duplicated usernames in 2.4. Are we talking about USERNAMES (realnames) - can't be changed or duplicated and are tied to the e-mail address (both unique) or DISPLAYNAMES? (friendlynames)

I don't think you should be able to create two users with the same lowercase rootname. This would be the 'realname' field.

(just what I 'thought')

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

JonB is correct ... But the username/displayname coding has been changed to better accept entry by users, so this link might help you with this problem, http://www.yabbforum.com/community/YaBB.pl?num=1280934509

The forum started out as a 1.5 SP1 Gold (I believe it was called?) and was converted to 2.4 ~2 years ago.

I will try to dig through the messages folder and come up with some examples

Edit: Here's an example (Removed text for simplicity)
Code
Select All
Re: TS 3 update|Speeder [21VB]|sleort19@hotmail.com|1265227081|speederfreak|xx|0|94.145.164.124|Text is here||||

Re: TS 3 update|Speeder [21VB]|sleort19@hotmail.com|1275851346|SpeederFreak|xx|0|94.145.164.124|Text here||||

And here is the "member file"
SpeederFreak.vars
Code
Select All
### User variables for ID: SpeederFreak ###

'realname',"Speeder [21VB]"

binary, they are different users because they have different ASCII values because of lowercase vs. uppercase characters.

But there is a problem. You have an idiot trying to circumvent your security (in a very stupid way) with multiple similar looking IDs. In so doing, if you ban one ID, they would still have the another to login into with.

Personally, I would ban them outright, along with their IP numbers, emails and pattern of their user names.

Good luck to your problem solving.
