Avatars don't display

I've just completed a fresh install of YaBB 2.5AE and it all seems to be working OK: Categories set, Boards established, members can register & post messages, etc.  I'm getting complaints that users cannot get the avatars to display.  Through the Admin center, they have been given the right to choose an avatar and/or upload one.  It just doesn't display.  I have tried it and I get a blank area where the avatar should go, but no image. Choosing "no image" on the User CP/ Options page  deletes the blank area.

Thanks!

For starters -

Are you getting a small red x in the 'box' where the avatar should appear?

Check your path settings (and permissions) for Avatar Directory and Avatar URL in Admin Center > Path Settings.

Good Luck

The paths for Avatars look OK, CHMOD is 755 for all folders and files.  Attached is the display image after selecting an avatar.  Note how everything is shifted as though the image is there, but no red X-box - just nothing.

A few quick thoughts -

How many members? Look at that 'Avatar directiory size limit'.

What browsers have you tested with?

Was the template, default.html or CSS tweaked?

I have a thought that I have run into this before, but I will have to do some searching and recollecting.

MAYBE Derek will figure it out!

Edited:
Ooo - doesn't UserAvatars need to be 666, the user has to be able to write to it

See if any files have been uploaded there

CHMOD Stuff: the Quick Start Guide, Step 3 says CHMOD=755 for the Avatars folder and contents, 755 for the UserAvatars folder.  I am using that setting.  I did try 666 but no change in behavior.

I have 15 users today, but expect to get back to 300 or so within a month.

I have tested with FireFox v3, 4, & 5, Chrome v10, 11, & 12, IE v7 & 8.

I made one mod to the default template - I substituted our HOA logo for the YaBB2.5AE logo.

One other item:  I have added 3 custom fields to the registration process for our residents to ID themselves.  I compare that info with a master record of homeowners.

Thanks!

I recall having a problem with Avatars on my 2.4 Forum when we displayed custom fields - BUT I wan't the one who did that part of the setup, I have a GM who is almost as much a geek as I am. And I am also unsure if it was that they 'disappeared' or if things were mislaligned.  And he is travelling ATM - he's a globe trotting German. Sooo I am unsure if this is much of a recollection.

I do have a plan however  Shocked

I'll send you a message when I get a chance to look, I'm busyy writing a proposal today.

Cool

OK

I know what's wrong, but I have not gotten to what the fix is.

The problem is with the javascript that resizes images in YaBB

Notice that if you are in the UCP, when you click on an Avatar that you want to select - you can't see the image to the right - that should not be happening; you should see the image.

Note that you are also getting a 'page completed with errors notification'.

If you do a view source, and compare the error output - it points to the javascript that does the image resizing of the Avatar - this is your problem.

most likely cause - missing YaBB javascript, bad upload (non-ASCII), or no execute permissions (check in yabbfiles)

attached is the view source and error listings:

Wink

Edited:
what casues the errors is the call to 'resize_images'.  I am speculating on the fix as I am not a YaBB devloper.  This also means that your 'image attachements' may not be working...

Thanks for taking a look at our Board.  I reloaded all of the Javascript files in the shjs folder and set CHMOD=755 as recommended.  Still doesn't work.

Since the suspect is Javascript, I tried another JS-driven feature. I set up my Categories to be collapsible, but that feature isn't working.  Also, the Collapse All button at the bottom of the forum doesn't work.  Both are Javascripts.

Is there a setting I should check on my ISP's Control Panel?

Thanks!

Hi,

Make sure that you have uploaded YaBB.js to your yabbfiles directory, because it can't be found on your server:

I fixed it!
I went to my ISP host's control panel and looked at the server's error log.  Nearly every attempt to run a .js file created a "404" error.  Using Filezilla, I checked the various folders and discovered that the .js files in the /Yabbfiles/ folder were missing.  Uploaded them, set permissions, and voila - stuff works now.  I feel kinda' silly that I didn't notice those files were missing earlier Embarrassed

Thanks again for your speedy help in this matter.  I really appreciate it. Grin
