Remove "Powered by Yabb" banner?

Hi all,

We've seen human forum spammers (not bots) come to our Yabb board via Google searches for the string "powered by yabb 2.5" (i.e., "fingerprinting"). As the spammers are actual people, they easily pass the captcha test.

We'd like to remove this invitation to attack - is there any way to remove the "Powered by Yabb" banner from our forum?

many thanks,
alec

I believe that removing that block may require a payment.

In the meantime - check out such things as admin approval of registrations including having a mandatory 'reason for registering' and adding the StopForumSpan mod http://www.boardmod.org/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1315522544

One thing I remembered that might help is bracket the
Code
Select All
{yabb copyright}

in the main template with
Code
Select All
<!-- robots content="noindex" -->     <!-- /robots -->

Google tends to follow the rules so should ignore what's within the robots tags.

Now, I haven't tested this on the YaBB copyright code, but iI have successfully used it in other places.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I was able to remove the banner by editing main.lng under languages\english. That seems to have done the trick nicely.

Thanks again for your suggestions,
alec

"hubots", nice term Smiley

Fortunately, they don't seem to be too bright. One of our hubots managed to supply the wrong password after he registered, and then it took him four attempts (three posts and an edit) before he got his spammy backlinks in place.

At least they were accompanied by a nice picture of Liv Tyler  Wink

I personally do not want to remove the YaBB copyright information, but I would like to add my own copyright info to the copyright section.

I see where I might be able to add my info above the YaBB info, but is there a way to edit the line that list my forum in the YaBB copyright area?

For example, right now it reads:

“MACJR'S Family Tree Forum » Powered by YaBB 2.5 AE!
YaBB Forum Software © 2000-2010. All Rights Reserved.”

I would like it to read something like:

“MACJR'S Family Tree Forum © 2011-2012» Powered by YaBB 2.5 AE! YaBB Forum Software © 2000-2010. All Rights Reserved.”

My board, for a select membership, is almost ready to open. It has been a lot of work to customize, but I do like the YaBB design and layout better than phpBB... except that I would like sub-forums in YaBB, too.

I was not fond of the YaBB 2.5 AE all shades of gray look though. It's not gray anymore.  Wink

Hi,

Languages/English/Main.lng

You can add your own copyright and remove the highlighted break tag:

Code
Select All
$yycopyright = qq~<span class="copyright"><a href="$boardurl/$yyexec.$yyext" class="copyright">$mbname</a> » Powered by <a href="http://www.yabbforum.com" class="copyright">$YaBBversion</a>!<br />\n<a href="http://www.yabbforum.com" class="copyright">YaBB Forum Software</a> &copy; 2000-2010. All Rights Reserved.</span>~;

That's better.

I actually did not want to remove the br, removing the separation between the two lines was a typo. However, I did find the correct solution by studying your post, and another post in this thread.

I had added my info in the default template. That did work, in a repetitive sort of way, but editing the main.lng was the right way. It looks much better now.

Thank you for your assistance.  Smiley
