Re: Forum Spam - Our Solution
You have to create the field first, then click Options (as i recall). OK, I just looked in my 2.4 forum and that is correct - Create field first, then click on Options when it appears in the list  Wink

Re: Forum Spam - Our Solution
Very Sorry Derek - you are absolutely right. Please ignore previous post. I had to click on the options button to get the screen you cited.
Thanks.  Embarrassed

Thanks JohnB. Haven't used the extended profiles page in a long time and had forgotten about the Options.

Re: Forum Spam - Our Solution
We tried using the "required field" concept that was presented here and have run into a glitch. Don't know if it is us or a bug.

Using the idea that Andy presented, we added the exact same question and settings. 25+13, 2 numbers only, required.

We had a member request a reset of his password. Went to his profile, entered the change, the extended profile field was there so entered "38" and clicked save. The next screen said "this is a required field" No matter what we do, it is as if it won't accept any changes to a user.

Did we do something wrong?

Paul

Re: Forum Spam - Our Solution
I'm pretty sure this must be a bug (I think I've mentioned it somewhere before). If you set a field to be required on registration, when editing any of the profile options (for any members who were already registered before you added the field) it will throw an error saying that you need to enter a value for that field. Even if you set it to only be editable by Admins under 'Admin Edits', it won't allow normal users to edit their profiles because it will say that the field is required - even though they don't have access to enter a value.

Unlike what Paul describes though, I've always found that once the value is entered it works as it should.

Re: Forum Spam - Our Solution
Hmm -

If a member is already registered -  and does not have the 'antispam' field in their profile - are tehy prevented from logging in - or is it just that they cannot edit the new field????

Huh

I think I've only noticed it since 2.4, but I'm guessing it's been that way from the start, yeah.

They can login, they just can't edit their profile.

Have a go here:

Username: test
Password: modtester

I've just added a required field on registration which is only editable under Admin Edits - try to save any of the profile settings...

Yeah, no one to report bugs to at the moment. Sad

Re: Forum Spam - Our Solution
I am using version 2.5AE

I enabled show the field in user profile and "admin edit". I then go to a user and go to the admin edits tab. The field  is there, but when I put in the answer "38" and click OK, the next page to pop up is the "this is a required field". No option to return or do anything. When I leave and return, the data is not saved.

In essence, it locks the account from any changes and from what I read, till that field is filled.

Is there a way to propagate these fields for existing members?

regarding the logon, it doesn't block them from logon but I can't say what features of the program may be disabled or blocked by this field not being filled.

I tried logging on as a new user and find a new user after filling in all the information, is also presented with the "required field" screen, effectively blocking the registration (Now, that's a way to deal with the spammers  Cheesy ).

New to the YaBB system. Should this be reported somewhere?

Paul

Re: Forum Spam - Our Solution
First - if they can log in - this field will not affect anything functional - the Extended Profile fields are purely cosmetic display - they allow you to add information, but are not used for any 'checks' other than at registration time.  YaBB functionality is all governed by Member groups and Admin Edits to Member groups.

I 'think' this is the right way to handle this.

Post a sticky note, or a Global Announcement - to the effect "Do not attempt to edit your 'Spam kicker' Extended Profile field" n the User Control Panel, while Derek and I do some 'Barnstorming' err 'BrainStorming'  Wink

There is actually no need to fill it in.

Re: Forum Spam - Our Solution
If the option is under Admin Edits though, users can't edit their profiles at all - it throws an error for all profile edits. If you log into my test board with the details in my last post you'll see what I mean (I only added it for the sake of this post though, so it won't be like that for long).

I still can't get it to behave as Paul describes myself, entering a value and saving under Admin Edits works fine for me. Undecided

I really wouldn't recommend using this method to successfully stop spam anyway. Since I added this to my test board yesterday, I have had over ten spammers get straight past it (and that's just a test board, with no traffic). If you want to use Questions and Answers then use the Anti-Spam Question Mod.

Re: Forum Spam - Our Solution
@ Derek -

OK, I have tested it on your board - I see the problem.

I guess we do need the 'fix basically as described below'

Option in Extended Profiles to

'add this required field to existing members' (update vars)
  Place board in Maintenance
     Iterate members
add field set to default value
     close
     report
     OK - yes/no
 Remove maintenance

I think I have an idea - but I need to 'play with it'  Wink

Thanks Derek -

Re: Forum Spam - Our Solution
Guys,
I just tried registering on our forum, with the "trap" enabled. This is a screenshot of what I get when I click OK on the registration page:

Even for a new unregistered member, there appears to be an issue with the required field.

Ideas?

Paul
