You have got a back-up to fix it?

I was bit wary that there could be a chance of this happening, because the auto-ban features have to open up Settings.pl:

http://www.boardmod.org/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1315522544/69#69

What permissions/CHMOD to you have on that file? You'll probably just want to disable the auto-banning features while I look into it - I assume you had them enabled? Undecided

Yes, I had a backup.  CHMOD is at 0666 for Settings.pl.  I will turn off the auto ban features for now.  I also just installed the Anti Spam Question Mod that you recommended.

Derek, I have a copy of the corrupted Settings.pl file.  I have gone through it and do not see any problems with it.  If you want to take a look at it I can send it to you.

Okay, I'm trying to seek a little advice on writing to Settings.pl on registration myself - I'll get back to you on it.

If you've got the Anti-Spam Mod installed, then that should stop most spam before the SFS checks need to be run, and it won't need to write to Setting.pl very often, so you should be safe to enable auto-banning again. I haven't heard of anyone else have this happen to them anyway - maybe if you enable it while you are around to keep an eye on it to see if it happens again - I'm interested to know if it was a one off coincidence or something that is likely to keep happening. Undecided

Yes, that would be great, thanks. You can just attach it to this thread...

I can't see anything wrong with it. Was your whole forum throwing a 404, and what made you realize it was Settings.pl?

I've just used that exact settings file on a test board and I'm getting no errors at all...

A 404 error is when a page can't be found, so wouldn't have thought that a corrupted file would throw that error - it would be more likely to throw a 500 Internal Server Error. Undecided

The whole forum was throwing a 404 error.  A month ago I was adding and IP address through Guardian and I made a typo.  Immediately I got a 404 error.  That is what alerted me this morning that it may be that file.

Blocked IPs in The Guardian are not stored in Settings.pl, they're stored in a .htaccess file in the yabb2/ directory.

I assume you can use .htaccess files on you server? What do you have in that file?

Derek, if you look at the end of the Settings.pl file that I posted here there is a large section titled '$ip_banlist =' and there are hundreds of IP addresses in that section.  I can bring down the forum in a second by going to the Guardian and entering any text besides IP addresses and the forum will crash with a 404 error.  If I look in the Settings.pl file after the crash, I can see the text in the '$ip_banlist =' section of that file.  I can then edit the file removing the garbage and the forum will come back to life.  I will look at the .htaccess file and see what it contains.  There are several of them scattered about the directory structure.

Derek, the .htacess file at the root of the yabb2 directory is 56k in size and has hundreds of IP addresses in it as well.

I really don't understand this, because like I say, IP addresses added to The Guardian are added to the .htaccess file - the IP addresses in Settings.pl are the ones added in Member Controls => Ban Members - they are totally different settings.

Did the SFS Mod auto-add all of those IPs or did you add some yourself - same with The Guardian?

This is a bit suspicious in the banned email list though:

Code
Select All
\,file_links\[d\:\\xr\-data\\seogyy\@gmail\.com\.txt\,1\,l\]

To test, back-up your Settings.pl and use the file that you attached earlier, but remove that from the email ban list first - see if you still get an error...

OK Derek...I just went into the Guardian and added an IP address in the IP ban section.  Both the .htacess file and Settings.pl indicated modification.  I checked the .htacess file and the new IP I had added was appended to the file.  I checked the Settings.pl file to what had changed but I could not find anything so I do not know what was changed in it.  SFS has only been adding names to the .htacess file since yesterday, all the other addresses are those that I added through the Guardian as you indicated should be the case.  However, I still can kill the forum by adding text through the Guardian resulting in a 404 error.  That doesn't concern me as I am not suppose to do that anyway Smiley  The forum is running fine with no more spam member requests.  The SFS is catching those 100% Smiley  We have had one valid member request today so we know the process is working fine.

OK, I will do that right now.
