Group and Board Permissions

I run a YaBB 2.3.1 board.  For the first time, I have a troublesome member (not spammer).  I wanted to give him a shot across the bow by disallowing him posting or replying to just one of the boards.

I created a probation member group and disallowed that group from posting or replying to a board but it did not work due to one member group trumping another.  This member is in two other groups, one post dependent and one not.

There are two places to select the probation group.   ‘Position’ and ‘Member Groups’.  The ‘Position’ selection trumps post dependent groups and the other does not.  Unfortunately, this member is in another non post dependent group that still trumps the new probation group.  So…there does not appear that there is a way to make the new probation group have priority.

If I make the probation group unable to post or reply, that works but then applies to all boards.  I didn't want to use a nuke when a stun grenade might do the job.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

The only thing I can think of (which I'm sure you've already thought of yourself) is to take them out of the other Post-Independent Group which they are in, and only having them in the 'probation' group.

Probably not the answer you were hoping for, but if anything else does come to mind, I'll let you know.

Thank you, Derek.

I have a couple of of dummy registrants with different group profiles and have been using these to test different methods.

Yes, that would actually work.

However, I didn't want to remove him from the other group as that would be over the top.  Looking for a surgical strike just to get his attention.

I would appreciate any other thoughts that may occur to you.

OK -

Can I ask the obvious - have you PM'ed him to try to get a resolution???

(I'm guessing the answer is 'well only about x times'...)  Wink

I have an idea I want to play with on a test forum, but 1st I need to ask -

Would a temporary, reversible measure that kept him from posting to any boards be an acceptable solution???

Good Luck

Better than complete banning.  I can do that by making the probation group not able to post.  Put him in it and then remove him after he has served his sentence.   Wink

This works while leaving him in the post independent group that allows access to our customers only areas.

This is what I was going to do should it become necessary.  At this point it looks as if the other members are going to ignore his incitements.  This is the best possible solution....natural consequences.  Keep posting idiotic and insulting crap and then you have no one to talk to anymore.   Grin

Like this, Jon,

This has worked for years.  Never had to consider banning anyone before but this one is psychotic by definition.
