Unable To Reject Registrant

I am a global moderator for a 2.3 version.

I have had a registrant (spammer) sitting in pending since December 21st with the error that it is an incorrect/invalid user name.

In the past when I have gotten those, if I am unable to reject or delete, it will fall off after a few days on its own.

Curious what to do.

Universal moderator is not available to do anything there.

Thanks!

Lindaru,

I had the same problem until Derek let me know how to fix it. Check out what he had me do below:
Derek Barnstorm wrote on Dec 1st, 2011 at 11:15pm:
Hi Bill,

Take a look in the Members directory for a username.pre file - if one's there, delete it.

That should do it. If it doesn't, look for *.wait ... another extension for registrations that are awaiting admin approval.

Edited:
Uh, if you have FTP access that is.   Wink

Lindaru,

The following might explain it better:

Good luck,

Bill

Hi, there . . . this one is not showing up in the members directory and no others in there with a *.pre or *.wait.

I checked the ban list and he/she had previously been banned by user name and I.P. address.  So not sure what to do next?

Thanks!

Hi,

A couple more places to check would be in the Members directory:

memberlist.approve or memberlist.inactive.

Or in the Variables directory:

registration.log

Where abouts exactly are you seeing this error?

If the registration had an error and it's in the error log and doesn't appear to be anywhere else (no '.pre' or '.wait' file with the new registrant's name on it ) then, in theory, the registration never went through . How about clearing the error log?  Wink

(I recognize that error.  It's in the error log.)

That is, of cause, if that's what Lindaru actually meant?

I've had that error show up repeatedly in my own error logs (2.5AE) and I'm making the assumption that 2.3 doesn't have some weird bug that would allow a registrant to both create an error AND get through the registration process.

Of course, if the banned user were trying to log in with their old credentials, that might be an explanation for the error -  attempted banned user login attempts are documented in ban_log.txt  - but maybe, just possibly, 2.3 also logs that as an error if the attempt is coming from a non-banned IP. In that event, the error is unrelated to the issue at hand.

I think Lindaru needs to explain their issue in a little more detail. Wink

Sorry all if I am causing confusion.

Apparenty our server is down at the moment, so unable to  repeat the actions and copy down the exact error message. Basically, upon "Instant Reject" get something that user is not validated.

"View Profile And Decide" (where I can normally reject from there), select that and get "Invalid Username".

Thinking that if I "validate", I might get the right thing, I once again get the "Invalid Username".

I have checked the members list and nothing there.  Error log was cleared.  Nothing there.

I.P. and user name previously banned (apparently by the universal moderator at some point).

?

Let me know if there is anything further I can describe.  Again, they did not give me an instruction manual for all of this when I took over.

See reply #4. When your server is back up, open up those files in a text editor and if there are any lines reflecting that specific user, remove them.

Sorry to be so late getting back to you all . . . the site owner managed to fix the particular problem spoken of on this thread; however, a new one is coming up occasionally after a series of "rejects".  Sometimes instead of completing, I will get a message similar to and as from the error log I get:

Error: Net::SMTP fatal error : Unable to create Net::SMTP object. Server: 'smtp.bluecom.no'Bad file descriptor at (eval 4) line 4.

I will often clear the error log and it still happens.  I find that if I walk away and leave the attempted reject/delete untouched for several minutes, I can then go back in and reject/delete without error.  This gets to be a bit of a pain as I really would like to get through the several known spammers who have nothing better to do than keep trying to sign up under different I.P. addresses with similar user names.

Not sure if this has something to do with it (I am an administrator and not a programmer), but it might.  Under our  module information, there is an area that says:

Net::SMTP::TLS

Information provided by the system:

Can't locate Net/SMTP/TLS.pm in @INC (@INC contains: C:/Perl/site/lib C:/Perl/lib . ./Modules D:/Websites/Booji/forum2) at (eval 17) line 3.

Thanks!

Net::SMTP::TLS is optional. But of it was there, YaBB would use it.

At a guess, there may be a limit as to how many emails can be sent out in rapid succession and you're hitting that limit. (Too many threads open to  Net::SMTP or something like that.) Like I said, it's a guess. So if you have an idea at what point you get the glitch, just take a break at that point and come back. Sorry I can't be more helpful.)

OR: check out http://www.yabbforum.com/community/YaBB.pl?num=1324986216 to disable emailing the rejection to the spammers. (Note I have not actually tested this solution but I probably will sometime this week. I just don't have a lot of spammers getting through these days.)
