the IP address or hostname you use for FTP 'says' where your forum is located on the internet. (I'm betting on that company that has your website)

if your forum's address is to the right of your website's root address its a pretty good bet its on the same server

(like so:)

if your website is:
Code (HTML)
Select All
www.yourdomain.net/index.htm (or whatever)

and your forum is
Code (HTML)
Select All
www.yourdomain.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl

they are almost for sure on the same server.

Good Luck
Cool

Hi!

Many thanks for the help. I have now figured out that I already have an ftp built in my computer (Mac).
How do I know if the forum is on a host server? What other options are there? I dont have any server of my own.

We do have our webpage which is on a server with a local bussiness.

Hi Jessica

If your YaBB forum is on a hosted server, you will need to use your Control Panel or FTP to backup your YaBB board and its data to your local machine.

If you have a board with a lot of posts and/or members (let us say - more than a thousand of either) you should probably use FTP.  Some Control Panels have arbitrary limits on how many files to display and/or transfer.

http://www.yabbforum.com/codex/YaBB.pl?num=1190676483

You will need to transfer the data (under yabb2) in ASCII/Text mode, and Attachments (under yabbfiles) in Binary mode.

If you have more questions - just post them  Wink

BTW - one of the good things about the upgrade will be that YaBB now has a built-in Backup tool - it was added in Yabb 2.3, so that is why you didn't find it...

Good Luck

Thanks for your anwser! Yes, I will do a back up, but where and how do I do it? Is it done from my Admin panel somewhere? Feels like I have looked in every "corner" in there but cant find anything.
I wasn´t the one installing the Yabb, it was the work of the  former Moderator. So not done from my computer if this matters at all  Huh

2.4 and 2.5 both have good antispam solutions. And backup everything to a place off the main server (like your home machine and maybe even twice, in two places) before doing ANYTHING major to your forum.

Although most people have few issues during their upgrades, there's always the possibility of things going wrong and you don't want to lose everything if something bad does happen.

If you only have one solution to a problem you're not trying hard enough!

I am running 2.2.3 at the moment. And have had masses of spam registrations. There for I am thinking of updating to 2.5AE. Is this a solution?
If it is where do I make a backup copy before I begin?
