That's why I instead choose to presume when it's warranted.  Cheesy

Getting some of these messages in the error log:-

Quote:
Error: To perform this action you must be logged in. If you don't have an account yet, please register.

You'll probably also see &action=modalert&num= in your error files as I'm still getting them.

In total, including all other errors, I get about 500 every 3 hours or so, and I rotate them out at that number.

Yep, that should do it.  Smiley
But again, Dandello's post here make me think about what I had done before. Smiley

The thing is, I had wrongly thought that shaded checks meant they were inactive.  Roll Eyes

Hi Bill

There was one of the boxes checked so I have unchecked that box, as you can see this is how you are saying it should look like, see attached image.

Will see what happens in the next couple of days, fingers crossed.

Dandello's post here got me thinking about how spammers might still be able to send PMs.

In other words, even though in Broadcast Messaging you currently have it set to none, are any of the 3 boxes below this setting checked?

I ask because if any of them are checked, even though they would be greyed out because of the none setting you currently have, they can still be active alerts that spammers can use. I confirmed this in our own forum.

So, if any of those boxes are checked, go back to Broadcast Messaging, temporarily change none to Administrators, and then uncheck each of those boxes if any are checked.

Then change the Administrators option back to none, and click the Save icon.

Note: I now recall that I had inadvertently left those 3 boxes checked in our own forum after I had changed our broadcast settings to none. What stymied me was that I was still getting spam PMs. Finally, when I unchecked those boxes, the spam PMs stopped; not immediately, but after a few more slipped by for whatever reason for a few minutes longer as I was working on this, the spam PMs stopped entirely.

I hope this is what's been going on in your forum, and if so, then you now know the solution. If not, surely someone else here will be able to give you the right solution at some point.

Good luck!

Enable Broadcast Messaging for - the pull down menu is set to none

Doubled checked this and it's set to none

Forgot to mention

I could be wrong about this, but I still think the spammers are using the broadcast messaging feature to send PMs.

Maybe you should check your Broadcast Messaging settings again. If you haven't disallowed it by choosing (None) then you'll need to make sure there's no check to Allow guests to send Broadcast Messages to the Administrator(s)?.
Edited:
Important: Even if you choose the none option, you still cannot have any of the 3 boxes checked below that setting. Otherwise, spammers will still be able to send PMs even when those boxes have been greyed out with checks in them.

Thanks for info but still getting PM

It's not a broadcast message it is a standard PM which is only getting sent to the administrator, scratching head a lot now.

Well, since YaBB defines an ex-member as someone who doesn't have a .vars file, of course they're all ex-members.  Wink

Interesting. I wonder why or how the spam-bots get YaBB to list themselves as ex members versus posting or trying to post as a guest Questioning
