YaBB 2.6.0
2.3.1 to 2.5 questions

hello and thanks for a nice site and BB.

History:
I did run/install the yabb installation from CPANEL of my host. All seemes to be ok.

I backupped the forum.

Then I have (tried) update from 2.3.1 to 2.5 using the upgrade zip-file.

When I tried to login as admin I got an error and files was set to a lower security mode.

I did the chmods settings again, by using filezilla client.

The error I get is:

Paste from mainboard:

No Masterkey was set in the Security Settings/Validation Image section of the Admin Center
Now using default value which is less safe!!

paste end

I have no access to admin settings.

Anyone able to guide me in this topic?

Thank You

regards

Hi site -

Question - are you saying

A. - you are unable to login as 'admin'?

or

B. - Are you saying you able to login as admin, but you cannot access the Admin Center in YaBB?

If B - You may need to use this fix: (second on the page)

http://www.yabbforum.com/codex/YaBB.pl?num=1198940158/0#2

If need be - read this post on the issues of 2.3.1 to 2.5:

Good Luck

I looked at the screenshot you posted. I'm not sure your upgrade went as planned.

Is that screenshot 'supposed' to be an upgtraded forum??? Ijust visited it...

What concerns me a bit is the logo, and the icons - they aren't from the YaBB 2.5 download...

If you want you can PM me with either teh admin PW, and/or the FTP access info and I will take a look at it for you.

OKAY -

I think we have this sorted out

Did you do a one-click install and then try to update an empty forum???

Because the forum is totally empty AND it shows teh admin as joining in 2009.

Good Luck

Hi sorry to be a pain, but am unsure if I have upgraded my forum or not.

In my Admin Center I get this:

Quote:
Version Information
YOUR version:      YaBB 2.3.1
Latest STABLE version:      YaBB 2.5 AE
Latest BETA version:      none
Latest ALPHA version:      YaBB Next Edition

There is a stable version available!
If you would like to download YaBB 2.5 AE, please go to .

I downloaded the YaBB 2.5 AE upgrade file and followed instructions. Went through the CHMODs etc etc.

When finished and I click save, my version information doesn't change, it still displays what it says in the above quote box.

I say i'm unsure if i've upgraded because I recieve no error when I clicked save..

Would be nice if I could delete all the yabb files completely, replace them with the new version, but I don't want to lose all my members, posts etc etc.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Warpo - when you go to Detailed Version Check (under admin) what do the files there say? If the upgrade was successful the Detailed Versions in that list will show you have YaBB 2.5 files.

If that's true, then the culprit is a file in Variables (I think) that didn't get updated properly.

I'm really confused now....

Everything says 2.3.1.

I spent over half an hour making sure all the chmods were correct.

Been trying to think what my problem is and i'm wondering.

Quote:
YaBB_2_5_upgrade_all = 2 folders (cgi-bin & public_html)

YaBB_2_5_upgrade_from_2_3_x = 2 folders (cgi-bin & public_html)

I may have put the files in the wrong place, but im not sure.

In my ULTIMATE ROOT where my public_html folder is I didn't place the cgi-bin folder. Instead I placed the cgi-bin folder here:

/public_html/cgi-bin

Should it be in the ultimate root?

/cgi-bin

I installed yabb in /public_html/yabb

So this is how I uploaded the files:

I uploaded the cgi-bin folder in the public_html root:

/public_html/cgi-bin/
/public_html/yabb/

When I first tried an update and failed I placed the yabbfiles as it is in the download:

/public_html/yabb/yabbfiles/

I did that a couple of weeks ago, and failed to upgrade.

Now the stable version 2.5 is out, I thought I would give it a go again.

The files inside yabbfiles I placed inside the yabb directory.
/public_html/yabb/

As you can see I messed it up slightly and would appreciate any help tidying these files up.

Is it possible to just delete the yabb folder, recreate it with the new files and keep members and their posts and all info?

As I said before, so sorry to be a pain.

One: back up your old forum and put the backup in a safe place - like download it.

Two - find your existing forum files (a look at Paths.pl through your admin center will tell you a lot.) On an average Linux server set up, the cgi-bin will be in the public_html folder - but not always. (and apparently your set-up is one of the different ones.)

Three: The new install goes on top of your old one - the new stuff in yabbfiles goes in the pre-existing yabbfiles folder, rewriting the old files.

New Sources goes in the old Sources folder. (probably at cgi-bin/yabb2/Sources) rewriting the old files.
Ditto for Admin, Modules, Variables, Languages, and Templates (don't replace Templates if you've done a lot of modification on them).

Do the same with yabb2/Admin.pl and yabb2/YaBB.pl

DO NOT replace anything in Messages, Members, or Boards
Be prepared to reset all your variables, go through the maintenance routines - rebuild member list, messages, etc.

In the event you go for a complete virgin install of 2.5 - the material in Messages, Members, and Boards is the stuff you need to move back into your new install.

I can definitely empathize with the confusion even though I'm relatively savvy about computers. On a scale between 1-10 with 10 being the most knowledgeable, I'm probably a 5.

Being average as I am about this stuff, that's been one of my biggest frustrations with YaBB or any other forum for that matter. In practice, only those of you who have the smarts to manage this kind of stuff will be able to install, upgrade, and fine tune a forum. For the majority of people, I'm sure, we end up going to Facebook, and chatting things up that way.

Wish list: Provide an installation package that is a click and use forum if that's even possible. Or at least provide very user friendly step-by-step instructions to help the average person install, and maintain YaBB. Otherwise, for the most part, forum software will only be popular with geeks who have the smarts to figure all of this stuff out.

On a non-geek related note, if I remember correctly when I updated our YaBB 1.4 forum to YaBB 2.4 as we have it today, I believe I made a fresh/virgin install in a folder named YaBB2 versus our YaBB folder.

When that worked without a problem, believe it or not, in one quick move I simply changed the folder's name on the server from YaBB2 to YaBB after renaming the original folder to YaBB-old, and BAM; I was magically using our YaBB 2.4 forum.

I know; very unconventional, but it worked.  Shocked

Disclaimer: If any of you do what I did, it'll be at your own risk.  Wink
