As in the title, My error log was working perfectly, but now it won't register any errors even deliberate ones as a test.

totally lost at the moment as to a fix.

Don't give up just yet, and please remember that answers can't always be instantaneous. Wink

Have you checked your Error Logger settings? Maybe something was inadvertently changed.

Thanks for the reply Bill.
I have checked the error log setting, they are OK.

My fear and frustration is that this was caused by spammers that get through and register on our forum.

As I can't see when our guys have problems of impending problems from spammers I feel the forum is vulnerable without the error log.

A. I moved it because this is where it belongs, and therefore is most likely to have someone else answer it, perhaps before I gave it a go (as I have a 'job' that has to be done every day)  everybody here is a volunteer, all with different levels of knowledge.

B. Lets do an 'system check' and test.

in the Admin Center, Forum Configuration > Advanced Settings > Advanced, what are these settings currently?

Quote:
Error Logger
Enable Error Logging? (Checked = Yes)
Allow for Log Rotation?
(Oldest entries in Error Log will be deleted as new entries are added when total entries reaches the number set below)
Number of entries before Error Log rotates

Now please look in ./Variables/errorlog.txt at the last few lines - depending on your setup you may need to DL the file via FTP to do that.

Code
Select All
1328745609|1328745607|209.216.nn,nn|<b>Error</b>: Username / Password mismatch. <br />The Username you specified does not exist or you entered a wrong password. |login2|||admin|dogpoo
1328745631|1328745629|209.216.nn.nn|<b>Error</b>: Username / Password mismatch. <br />The Username you specified does not exist or you entered a wrong password. |login2|||admin|zxywabc
1328745647|1328745646|209.216.nn.nn|<b>Error</b>: The User ID field was not filled out. It is required. |login2|||admin|

Take the first digits from the last few lines (they are Unix timestamps) and use this converter and see when they were recorded.  (I edited the source IP's last 2 quads to nn.nn)

http://www.onlineconversion.com/unix_time.htm

my log's 1328745631 == Thu, 09 Feb 2012 00:00:31 GMT, as I had a couple errors logging on to test for this reply.

That should tell you when the last errors were logged.

Now log out, and make a couple login errors - then check the error log again.  this will tell us for sure if it is logging.

IF it is not logging, log back in, go to Admin Center, same page and tab, turn on Debug mode, and disk space check.

Force an error and see what happens. YaBB should tell you...

Thanks for the help.
I didn't choose a good time to quit smoking really Roll Eyes

I checked for errors without any luck I did a FTP  and no results were found there I'm afraid.

I have no idea what to do now.

I looks like I m going to have to carry on without the error log because I am totally lost now.

I sometimes wonder why I took this job on for the club, late nights and stress is all I get from it Smiley

Hi

PM me the login details for admin, your board URLS and the FTP info and I will take a look

I don't promise I will find the problem, only that I will look at it... OK?

Well, I am officially stumped áHuh

A. the errorlog.txt is where it belongs and the permissions appear Ok (644) as is everything else in ./Variables.

B. I turned on debugging and forced errors - YaBB says it is opening and closing the file.

C. I inquired about disk space and ex-members (signs of disk quotas) - not an issue. áThe Board is apparently working OK, other than error logging.

D. The errorlog.txt file has a Zero byte size and was last modified on Feb 1st. á(the zero byte size made me think áof disk quota).

E. The Admin Center settings are correct for Error Logging

F. I have another thing I need to check, but I don't seem to be able to login (just thought of it this AM)

Edited:
I checked advsettings.txt. áSadly - the advanced setting file has the correct settings for error logging. áHad they been missing or incorrect, we might have had a solution

That's it for now

I know you might not like hearing this from me again, but I've revived "dead files" by changing the permission to 666 from 644.

My printed instructions from YaBB for the Variables folder is for CHMOD 755 and for all files in that folder to be CHMOD 666.

It won't hurt to try. You can always change it back.  Wink

For the record in case anyone's missed it from me, on occasion I've had files stop working for me, but for a reason I still don't understand, when I've changed permissions from 644 to 666 the files worked again.

It should be noted that almost all of our members var files are still with a 644 permission, and they work fine. Only a few have needed to be changed to 666. Go figure.

Morning, noon, or night, have a great one!

That's a good point Bill -- it can't hurt is right.

And if it works, you get at least 10 points~

Ah, ha! Maybe that's the problem. áQuestioning

In that Variables folder you should see the errorlog.txt file.
