Re: Help
Thanks Derek

I wasn't even on a computer when that problem arrived. I was notified by a few members that the site was down.

If I were to guess, I think the problem was caused by something my host provider was doing. Of course it would be useless to even ask them.

Anyway, a temporary fix was to create a file named .5.162.pre and place it in the members directory.

Now when a new member registers the forum shows two unapproved members waiting to be validated, but when I go into the registration log I only see one name.

I need to track down if there is another file that holds registration information so I can clean it up.

Re: Help
Maybe this will help?

Derek Barnstorm wrote on Jan 5th, 2012 at 5:07pm:
Hi,

A couple more places to check would be in the Members directory:

memberlist.approve or memberlist.inactive.

Or in the Variables directory:

registration.log

Re: Help
Thanks Bill

Those were the first files I looked at. The only information they contain are the ones I can account for.

Re: Help
Are you able to get the error logs from the server?
Can your host provide you with them?

Re: Help
The root of this problem is that YaBB does not handle all numeric registrations properly, the fact that there were punctuation marks [the full stop/dot] in the username notwithstanding.  The registration process did not complete - thus the .pre file (whether created or not) is in disagreement with the supporting files.

I will try to give you a proper 'flush' later today or tomorrow AM.

Re: Help
Ah, no wonder. That makes sense. I've sometimes seen this problem from spam-bot registrations. But luckily for me, I was able to clean things up with the simple deletion of any *.pre or *.wait extensions that were mucking things up.

Of course, now spam-bots can't even get to the 1st step of the registration process, so I don't have any errant *.pre or *.wait extensions to deal with any more.

Re: Help
Maybe we also need a all numbers detector in registration to force an error when someone tries this.  (Let me noodle on this one.)  Wink
