YaBB doesn't have such a setting and if you copied and pasted that warning from your warning email, that 'result' part doesn't look valid (Like that was part of the bad string you're being warned about.)

Guardian simply looks for the input (disallowed strings and missing user names, blocked IPs, etc.) - it has nothing to do with and knows nothing about the Captcha settings.

Dandello is of course correct about this.

Bill - what we appear to be seeing in the original complaint isn't related in anyway to stopping spammers from registering. (Although letting new users know about the anti-spam mods isn't a bad thing.)

But on a related note regarding the CAPTCHA verification codes that are generated, this is something you can easily change if you want to stop spam-bots cold (click this link for details).

I used the anti-spam method above when I didn't know how to use Boardmod, which I needed to use to install anti-spam mods that were written specifically for YaBB.

Note: For those who know how to edit YaBB files, anti-spam mods can be manually installed although that's not recommended by the developers of these mods.

Bill - what we appear to be seeing in the original complaint isn't related in anyway to stopping spammers from registering. (Although letting new users know about the anti-spam mods isn't a bad thing.)

This appears to be a clever example of social engineering designed to panic an inexperienced admin to wasting his/her time hunting down a setting that doesn't exist and possibly turning off Captcha altogether.

Just to reiterate: Guardian will report the ID of the person (in this case 'Guest') who tried to pull a fast one by putting BS in the query string, their IP address (probably bogus) and the text of the blocked query string. (A query string is what comes after the '?' in a URL.)

It doesn't give recommendations on 'how to solve the problem'. It's simply reporting that Guest at IP address whatever tried to give YaBB some possibly very bad instructions through the query string and Guardian stopped them.

But as a general recommendation - banning that IP address might not be a bad idea. It may not do any good but you'll feel better about doing something.

I suspect you're right about this. But additionally, it wouldn't surprise me if the author of such a program is simply ignorant in the ways of grammar and spelling. Such is the case with a lot of phishing programs.

Experienced forum admins will of course know that CAPTCHA has become useless because of spam-bot automation that comes up with required verification codes to register. Thankfully, effective anti-spam mods have made the use of CAPTCHA verification codes unnecessary.

The happy result for prospective members is they don't have to be irritated by a verification code that a lot of admins set at levels that make it really difficult to decipher.

With the anti-spam question mod, I've also see admins ask questions that effectively stop almost everyone from registering, the result of which are forums with very few members. But to each their own, as there are most surely good reasons for this. Some admins obviously want their membership to be kept small.

With our forum, we've always been as inclusive as possible, so we obviously want to make it as easy as possible for people to register. The obvious downside is that admins and moderators need to be especially diligent in managing their forums.
