I have been playing with the access settings but what I need is simple and I can not see there is a way :

I want to allow Guests to see and post in one particular category but not be able to access any other at all.

Thanks in advance

Hi what YaBB are you running ??

some info for 2.3.1 2.4 2.5
goto admin > Forum Controls > Categories
then select the particular category you want with the checkbox then click edit there you will see Allowed to View/See Category and de-select all and then save and then do this for all Categorys but then select all then goto Forum Controls > Boards select all checkboxs then goto edit and find "Show to all?" for evry board and check that its not checked If its checked de-select but only for Boards you dont want to show.
hope this helps  Wink

I realized that and did a new screen cap. Even my Categories section looks different than yours. (And this Admin section is still pretty vanilla.)

I thought I would take another look at this while I am waiting for solve my other problem.

xnoddyx, thanks for the step by step but I am afraid I am still stuck, basically I expected to see Guest as someone I could restrict.

I currently have all Account Types selected in the three Categories and "Show To All" only in the first Board.

To Re Cap I want only the first Category available to guests and everything else hidden or restricted.

In that case -

1. In Admin center > Forum Settings > Members: Disable Guest Access must be "unchecked' - this 'opens' your Forum.

2. Permissions in YaBB are set at the Board Level.  Guest can see anything you don't restrict. Start creating Public (guest boards)

2.1 At the Group Permissions, don't set anything - all the boards that are in that first 'category' should not have any restrictions at all on, and they should be marked 'Show to All' - this is how the General and Test boards are set in the default install.

You can't post to YaBB without being a member, so Guests will be able to read those Boards, but not post replies or start new topics.

Add a few posts to test the boards. Now logout, and make sure you can still see that Category and its Boards.  You should see prompts to 'send to a friend' & 'print'.  If you can see the posts, then Guest Access is working.

3. Now work on your private Category(s) - We will assume (for now) you just want all members to have the same privileges:
3.1 Create Boards the same way BUT
3.1.1  Place them in one of your "Meant to be Private Categories"
3.1.2  Don't enable 'Show to all'
3.1.3  in Group Privileges area, select all the Member Groups (use Ctrl Click) in all the permission columns (start topic, reply, view, start polls).  This way everyone who is a member can see (view) all the 'cool stuff' and use the reply, start new topic etc.

Now, create a test member (maybe Tester) in Admin Center.  Logout as admin. Login as Tester, you should see the Private Categories and the Boards within.

4. Now enjoy your YaBB Forum... You can twiddle the privileges if you want real 'Staff Boards' for teams, or add 'Premium Boards' where only members with X number of Posts OR who are members of a Post Independent group have access.

I hope this clarifies things a bit.
Cool

I find your lack of faith disturbing.
