No biggie because we can adjust the time to whatever we want it to be, but when this post was published, and then subsequently edited, the London time that's showing in this forum was slow by 14 minutes (although it was correct for me since I adjusted it).

As it's been reported that JonB is hosting this forum on a server he controls, I'm guessing his server's time is slow by 14 minutes. Or probably more accurately, his server's time is correct, but because of a previous adjustment that I think Corey made in the Admin Center to correct the time before, that adjustment needs to be edited or zeroed out.

Just saying. Cheesy

Bill -

Thanks for noticing that.  I am a believer in running server clocks on UTC, so between now and the weekend, I will sort that out and 'YaBB Time' will be Zulu time...

I have to say its not my highest priority at this instant.  Wink

OK - so I have OCD -

I never could figure out why UK2's hosttimes were wrong.  Shouldn't a hosting operation have 'dead-on' server clock times?  I knew my Linux servers drifted a bit (a few minutes +- over a month) Ah well, matey its a long story -

I'm not a believer in 'patching' things unless absolutely necessary, so I will do a proper 'repair/fix' after I get things sorted out. For now we are going to put a shim in there.

Whatever else you may have done made the London time exactly correct (within seconds at least).  Smiley

For anyone whose minutes are off from this forum, at least as of this post, your time in incorrect. Check in your Admin Center to see if you made a previous adjustment on the minutes that's no longer needed.

There are plenty of places to check for the accurate time such as The Official NIST US site (their widget page), which is what I use to automatically adjust the time on my computers.

Looks like the shim worked.

On Windows machines, the OS has a running NTP client built in.  You just have to point it at a timeserver (such as the ones that NIST maintains) or Microsoft, Abovenet, Hurricane Electric etc...

For Linux, its apparently a bit more complicated  Huh

Probably because when Unix was invented. NTP did not exist yet.

I have permanently fixed the 'time' issue for the period where we are running on my servers.

ASTOUNDINGLY enough, most Linux distributions do not install/enable the NTP clients/servers that are native parts of the OS by default. So this AM, I did the right thing. It wasn't hard, and I am at a loss why that decision was made. It might have to do with 'isolation' or defaulting it 'off' to lessen the threat surface. I just don't know (and I did not do any in-depth research). I do know that the whole time we were on UK2's server, the time had to be shimmed, and that tells me this is likely a common issue.

I also fixed several other minor inconveniences (to me).

We need to fix this 'message' because the 'move reason' was NOT off-topic - it was 'previous thread here' for instance
