Actually 777 permissions are not required if your user permissions are properly set to the files.

For starters, here is a good, and as far as I can tell, accurate description of "The Evils of 777".  The author goes into a thorough explanation of how 777 hacks work.  It is on my list to 100% validate that this is all accurate - but I don't see any logic errors.

Cool

That is why when I upload everything, the files are first set as 777 to get the Set.pl running and when done with the installation, set the permissions to 750 (for read onlys) or 770 (reads/writes).

As with any server in a hostile environment (ie, Internet facing), minimal permissions is always best.

On my server, and all servers will vary, my files are CHOWNed to the Apache process's acount, and scripts are set to 700, static files 400 and read/write files 600. Apache process's account has a umask to create all files with 600 (as only files YaBB creates is in Messages and in Members. Note, I don't allow attachment uploads (for logisitcal reasons, rather than security).
