I'm getting a message I'm banned  Huh

I am coming from my own static IP, and I'm pretty certain I've never been to that site before (and I'm not often banned from sites Grin)

I have no problem accessing that forum either. It's nicely laid out.

On a related note, our forum actually has active members in good standing who contribute, and their IP addresses happen to be listed in the Stop Forum Spam database. Obviously, IP banning can be excessive, and lock out people who should be able to enjoy access.

Luckily, I'm very loose with our IP banning, and upon the advice of someone here in this forum, I'm even thinking of cleaning our IP ban list to start freshly again. After all, IP banning is really only a temporary solution.

In at least some YaBB forums the admins have their settings too restrictive in regard to their efforts to keep spam-bots from registering, and posting. Even this forum is too restrictive with its spam-bot measures, and in practice here it's more or less ineffective anyway.

A spam-bot can easily get through while a regular user can get banned, and remained banned for an extended period of time. Roll Eyes

Thankfully, for admins who know, YaBB's options to stop spam-bots cold is now very effective. As such, the banning of IP addresses is no longer needed, nor is the use of YaBB's Referral Security Checking needed even though experts here continue to recommend it.

If you want to see how an admin can keep their forum operating as it should without overly restricting access (even while allowing for guest posting), check out Dandello's 2.5.4 Alpha test bed forum. There you can also get a glimpse at how YaBB is working on its future. Exciting stuff!

Your userid or email provider might been on the banlist that triggers the ban.
