I think its all three (you are right) -

A. Most small forums will not see a problem. They are done in 5 minutes or less (the default CGI timeout is 5 minutes). YaBBForum.com is still a big forum data-wise and it prevents us from backing up currently. (thus you and I will fix manually).

B. Most Linux servers are set up the way the program already works. But many hosted servers use /usr/sbin instead of usr/bin These are the tricky ones;
/bin/gzip (for Tar compression)
/bin/bzip2 (for Tar compression)

Windows servers won't present the Tar Options, so its all archive::zip (which works pretty well)

AND

C. I think its the case that most larger forums rely on FTP based backups or host-provided server backups,

The biggest issue is its not automated (on my list & the Roadmap). Thus the admins can'r runn it when its 'not prime time' on their forums (unless they stay up all night).  Roll Eyes

Its still a problem that needs a documented workaround and a fix. I promise its less rare than the International Date Line bug.  The 'real fix' can probably wait for the Automated Backups programming.

I'll test the fixes when its not 'prime time', LOL  Wink

Cool

I'm thinking this must be pretty rare - or else nobody does backups to find this problem.  Roll Eyes (or they just do archive zips.)

OK, thanks

I'll look at it later and test at an appropriate time.  I can't test on my Linux server either, as everything works correctly there.

Its likely we should anticipate having a configuration option for both items, while 'auto-filling' the defaults in from pre-configured values in Settings.pl.

I will be moving this fix, along with an accurate description. to the 'new' Bugs topic once we have that straightened out.

Thanks very much

I have a tentative fix (which needs to be tested.)

in Settings.pl find
Code
Select All
@backup_paths =

add after
Code
Select All
$backupprog = '/usr/bin';

(change the '/usr/bin' to where you know the tar and zip modules actually are.)

In Admin/NewSettings.pl find:
Code
Select All
\@backup_paths = qw($backup_paths);

add after:
Code
Select All
\$backupprog = '$backupprog';

(If you don't change NewSettings.pl you'll lose the path variable when Settings.pl updates.)

Now, I can't properly test this since my home server is on XP and my VPS has the Tar and gzip modules in the standard place ('/usr/bin/'). If gzip isn't in '/bin/' we may need to add a variable for that as well.
(Change the name of the attached file to Backup.pl - obviously.)  Roll Eyes

Earlier today, we were testing the built-in YaBB Backup methods.  For 'this forum only' the patched Backup.pl has 'issues'.  Specifically it can't use the tar.gzip filter. This lead to multiple 'tar' jobs that ran for hours past the lifting of the Maintenance Flag - it was harmless as we already had a full backup.  The alternative was to abort the server - baaaad idea. We also had to make sure we could pull the data off and extract correctly.

I am working on a fix with the host and help from Dandello. I fully expect to have the problem solved in a day or two.  We are still getting standard daily backups of the whole server, so no data is at risk.  The testing was part of 'bolting together' of the different YaBB versions into a single code trunk.  When the Backup.pl fix is done, I will post the 'fixed' 2.5.2 style code and add notes to the 'best practices' Backup topic in ThinkTank.

Thanks
