New Users Login Issues after Upgrade to 2.5.2
Nov 9th, 2012 at 7:37pm

I've upgraded our forum from 2.5 to 2.5.2.

There is no problems with new users registering and activating their accounts.

When they try and login it is giving the message:

"Username / Password mismatch.
The Username you specified does not exist or you entered a wrong password. "

I've tried registering a test account myself, and I'm encountering this too when using the system generated password which is in the format "5jT0Lgj5lgC4l3Tp2Lz02Q" (without the quotes).

We have tried using the Forgotten Password link to reset the password, and when clicking on the link (from the reset email) the following error is displayed:

"You have an invalid ID. Please try again."

Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this ??

Thanks in advance for your help,

Daniel

can you ftp into your forum and check the CHMOD for the *.vars files are set to 644
and can you also check that the 5jT0Lgj5lgC4l3Tp2Lz02Q.vars file

will look something like this
Code
Select All
### User variables for ID: admin ###

'realname',"YaBB Administrator"
'password',""
'position',"Administrator"
'addgroups',""
'email',"webmaster@example.com"
'hidemail',"checked"
'regdate',""
'regtime',""
'regreason',""
'location',"The Land of YaBB"
'bday',""

YaBB install help video
1. what yabb forum are you running and the url
2. describe in as much detail as you can what happens and also post screenshots if you can
3. please be patient we live in different time zones and have other commitments but we will help you
as bill and ted say (Be excellent to each other)

Thanks for your reply.

I've checked and the permissions of the file testuser.vars was already set to 644.

The contents look like this:

Code
Select All
### User variables for ID: testuser ###

'realname',"testuser"
'password',"5jT0Lgj5lgC4l3Tp2Lz02Q"
'position',""
'addgroups',""
'email',"testemail@mydomainname.com"
'hidemail',"1"
'regdate',"11/09/12 at 19:27:31"
'regtime',"1352489251"
'regreason',"Test (Reg)"
'location',""
'bday',""

It then continues with more fields...

Any ideas ?

Thanks
Daniel

I've just been looking into this further.

In the file for admin.vars it shows a password of similar length to that shown in the testuser.vars file - eg, 5jT0Lgj5lgC4l3Tp2Lz02Q

Yet, when logging into admin that isn't the format of the password we would actually enter to login, but the testuser has been e-mailed that format as their actual password.

Is that correct ?

Thanks in advance,

Daniel

They show as 2.5.2

Code
Select All
YaBB Package	YaBB 2.5.2
YaBB.cgi	YaBB 2.5.2 Build 1.1
AdminIndex.pl	YaBB 2.5.2 Build 1.3
English Language Pack	YaBB 2.5.2

I'm not sure if you noticed my second reply (above) regarding looking into the actual passwords - Not sure if I am way off with the issue there, or if it makes any sense.

Thanks again,

Daniel

The passwords you see in the vars files have been encoded and there's no decode function to let anyone see what it was.

You can set the admin password by hand by opening the admin.vars (or any other vars file for that matter)  in a text editor and hand editi the password in plain text. Then the next login will encrypt it.

This "5jT0Lgj5lgC4l3Tp2Lz02Q" is an encrypted password where the original could be 4 letters long.

Not sure why a new registrant would be being sent an encrypted password.  This may require some looking into.

Yes, they received a password like that by e-mail and I did too when I tested it.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Yes, it seems as though all new users are being e-mailed the encrypted password, rather than the normal password.

They are then obviously unable to login as they are trying to login using this.

My install is a new 2.5.2 install with the relevant files from 2.5AE copied over (as per the upgrade instructions).

Any help would really be appreciated, as this is causing us some issues, as you would expect.

Thanks
Daniel

The quick fix is to allow them to set their own passwords - we know that works.

This is now an official bug and it on the bug-fix list.

Official bug - as in affecting every forum ?

Also, do I need to change both of the following settings in the meantime ?

E-mail new password if a user changes his/her e-mail address?
E-mail Random Password to New Member Upon Registration?

Thanks
Daniel

As in affecting every forum. We added a security encoding for passwords for new members - we thought we'd tested it but obviously hadn't because in encoding the password in this one section, it emailed out the encrypted password that was stored.  Embarrassed

I doubt it would be a problem with sending new passwords to existing members since that should be directly out of their vars file.

This will be in the fix-file.

In Register.pl find:
Code
Select All
	      $regpass = encode_password($member{'passwrd1'});

replace with
Code
Select All
     $regpass = $member{'passwrd1'};
