Here's how to enable POP in Gmail:

5.Choose what to do with your messages after your POP client or device receives them.

Although the radio button next to your selected option may not stay selected, Gmail displays the status next to 'POP Status:.' When you enable POP, your settings display 'POP Status: POP is enabled.'

If your POP settings are turned off, the status will indicate that POP is disabled.

next settings you will need:

1. Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS or SSL:
smtp.gmail.com
Use Authentication: Yes
Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587
Port for SSL: 465

2. smtp login:
Account Name or User Name: your full email address (including @gmail.com or @your_domain.com)

3.Password:
your Gmail password

YaBB Advanced Forum Preferences and Settings > Email:

Send emails using: Net::SMTP (Perl Module) or Net::SMTP::TLS (Perl Module)

SMTP-Server: smtp.gmail.com if this dont work try smtp.gmail.com:465 or smtp.gmail.com:587

Select SMTP Server Authorization Type: AUTO or try LOGIN or PLAIN if AUTO dont work

SMTP Authorization Username: your full email address (including @gmail.com)

SMTP Authorization Password: your Gmail password

I'm lost with the steps below. Where are the settings, is this in Gmail or YaBB?

you can verify this has worked by using a mail client
i.e. outlook express see http://support.google.com/mail/bin/static.py?hl=en&page=ts.cs&ts=1668960&rd=2 and click on I want to enable POP this will then show a list of mail client.

Can you please tell me what area in the Admin center because I couldn't find the fields to enter the data below? I am using YaBB 2.5

I know where the email section is, but where is "Use Authentication: Yes", "Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587" etc?



smtp.gmail.com:465 gives the follow error message after registration:
Net::SMTP fatal error : Unable to create Net::SMTP object. Server: 'smtp.gmail.com:465' Socket is already connected at (eval 1) line 4.

Then I tried smtp.gmail.com:587 and smtp.gmail.com, but still no email messages going through after registration.

My Gmail POP Download is set to the following:
1. Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since 12:00pm

this is for Net::SMTP::TLS (Perl Module) but if you keep to Net::SMTP (Perl Module) and try this as smtp.gmail.com:465 was giving you Socket is already connected try smtp.gmail.com as it seems to be set to Socket 465  Huh but the default Socket is 25 but your host seems to have set the default to 465

I don't know if this is the reason for it not to work, but my YaBB executable files end in ".cgi".

i can't see that causing you any problems i will go run a test with Net::SMTP (Perl Module) on my host to double check the info  but what i have given you should work for it.

Is this SMTP email feature all dependent on Gmail, or does it also need to use certain resources and go through my hosting service?

The reason being is their server may be having problems with this too.

ok for your host to have problems with this and sendmail can only really mean three to four things and not one of them being good.
ok can you try setting yabb to

Send emails using: YaBB SMTP Engine

SMTP-Server: smtp.gmail.com if this dont work try smtp.gmail.com:465

Select SMTP Server Authorization Type: AUTO or try LOGIN or PLAIN if AUTO dont work

SMTP Authorization Username: username@gmail.com)
SMTP Authorization Password: your Gmail password

and see if this will work  Smiley

It's not working and I have thrown in the towel but I really appreciate your kind help. Just have to let the web host fix sendmail and hopefully one day it will stay fixed.

Can you, or any experts please help shed some light into where the spam registrations below come from, whether they are the work of humans or programs. Maybe this is overwhelming their sendmail server, and the reason for it to stop working. I use both the CAPTCHA and fruit selection, and I still get many of these, but these are just some sample registrations. Also how can I stop them.
