quick upgrade tips

I always seem to have trouble with my message folder when I am upgrading. I think the main problem is that the ftp thing moves one file at a time, which take a while if you have 30000 threads. Drag and drop in cPanel seems to split the folder - perhaps it only moves 10000 at a time. I think the cPanel move (rename) function is the only good way to do it.

Anyway, I think the ideal way to do it is as follows:
1) rename the boards, members, messages and variables folders
2) Move all the other folders into a subfolder and change folder permission to 700
3) Install latest version over the top of existing structure.
4) After new board is up and running properly, move the new boards, members, messages and variables folders into a subfolder and change folder permission to 700
5) Rename the old boards, members, messages and variables folders to the correct names
6) Continue with default instructions for upgrading.

Is that sensible?  Can you add it to your instructions?
