IKea still assumes all their users are Lego gurus. (Yes, their instructions  still read like putting together the Lego space shuttle.)

And the StopForumSpam mod is here: http://www.boardmod.org/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1315522544  (But add Carsten's SpamFruits and Anti-Spam Question first - they may be all you need. SMF is pretty high test.)

The shebang is the first line in a Perl file. It tells the server where to look for Perl for the file being executed. For most Linux servers that line looks like
Code (Perl)
Select All
#!/usr/bin/perl --

BUT it could be (on a Window machine running Apache)
Code (Perl)
Select All
#!C:\wamp\wamp\Perl\perl\bin\perl.exe --

Your hosting service should tell you what your's is - but since you don't know and YaBB is running on your server I'm betting the default of
Code (Perl)
Select All
#!/usr/bin/perl --

is the correct one.

For the other part - if you've upgraded to 2.5.2 and are using a copy of your old Settings.pl, all you have to do is log into your Admin Center, go through and make sure things look right and then hit Save. YaBB will have read all the settings and will go through the process of updating your Settings.pl and adding the new 2.5.2 settings to it.

And xnoddyx is very good at helping people with their upgrades and installs.

I'm waiting for the "5 years old" version of how to install YaBB myself. Smiley

Seriously, it's always so comical to see software developers put together "how to" manuals for their products; as if the general public can ever understand them.

I'm kind of reminded of the old days of IKEA when practically nobody could follow instructions on how to put together furniture that needed to be assembled.

Morning, noon, or night, have a great one!

Be sure to check the shebang lines on 'ModuleChecker.pl' in the 'cgi-bin/yabb2/Admin' folder and 'SpellChecker.pl' in the 'cgi-bin/yabb2/Sources' folder of the package you downloaded.

Good Luck

For some reason I always forget to add that part.  Roll Eyes

StopForumSpam_Mod_V0_6.zip (28 KB | 146 )

I suspect you use the above files and use the Mod file from the package below (as it only contains a mod file).

StopForumSpam_Mod_V0_6_252.zip (7 KB | 14 )

If you're installing it on 2.5AE, then you just need the first one.

If you're installing it on 2.5.2 you'll need both as the first one has the additional graphics and Perl files the mod needs and the second one has the 2.5.2 specific install package. (Many thanks to Derek BTW, for keeping this mod up to date.)

The other anti-spam mods incorporated into 2.5.2 are also available as mods for 2.5AE.

Note: if you need help installing mods, Carsten's forum at http://www.carsten-dalgaard.dk/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl is the place for mod assistance - most of the current mod writers check in there.

All those settings are saved in './Variables/Settings.pl'. Save your old one and use it instead of the new version. Then go through the Admin Center and save things to update Settings.pl. You won't lose your old settings, but you'll get the new ones.

Quick and dirty 2.5AE upgrade instructions:
Back up your forum for safety in case something bad happens. (You will NOT be re-uploading this unless something bad happens.)

Download 2.5.2 and unzip it onto your harddrive.
FTP the contents of Sources, Admin and Languages into their proper folders on your server. (Make sure the CHMODs don't change on SpellCheck.pl.) Also upload AdminIndex.pl and YaBB.pl and make sure the CHMODs are 755. (DO NOT UPLOAD Paths.pl. DO NOT UPLOAD Setup.pl)

Go into the Admin center, select your anti-spam utilities and save them. Your old settings will have been read and saved just like saving settings in 2.5.

by setting I mean all the options i selected ... anything from time zone we are in to allowing or not allowing guests to post,  having members having to click a link in their email to validate the registration etc.... all those little options we have selected and customized.

after I download the newer version, when I upload it to the server will all my settings/options previously customized be removed?  if they will be removed by re uploaded and I back up my current files, then if I upload the backued up files then wont i just be running the old version? I am very confused on this upgrade
