but
freediver wrote on Jun 1st, 2013 at 12:06am:
SuPHP/SuEXEC

the SuEXEC is php-cgi or php-fcgi see http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/suexec.html for some more info on SuEXEC

ok #1 as Dandello wrote on Jun 1st, 2013 at 5:07am:
On my WebHostManager for my VPS there's a log of Daily Processes usage. You might look at yours and see if there's a clue there.

#2 ask your host if your site is running php-cgi or php-fcgi or if it is running perl

and sorry I can't be of much help to you as i am not a server expert I can only hope JonB will see this post when he has free time but if you have a load Level of I think 94% - 99% on any item of the server you may start to experience problems and I know that you are a big forum with posts but the Users Online looks consistent with normal forum use so I don't see that being the source of the load problem if you do have a server load issues.

best bet to find what is going on is next time you get the one new message error is take note of the time it happen at then get a copy as #1 and also the normal server logs i would also say run your forum in Debug Mode for admin
but as you don't know when it will happen it is a bit pointless
making a copy of the output for that up to just after the error

YaBB install help video
1. what yabb forum are you running and the url
2. describe in as much detail as you can what happens and also post screenshots if you can
3. please be patient we live in different time zones and have other commitments but we will help you

Well, upgrading your PHP to 5.3 certainly won't help since YaBB  is Perl, not PHP.

On my WebHostManager for my VPS there's a log of Daily Processes usage. You might look at yours and see if there's a clue there.  (I'm also wondering if the techs at your host have any clue at all that your problem is not PHP related and therefore upgrading PHP isn't going to do anything to solve the problem.)

If you only have one solution to a problem you're not trying hard enough!

Is there some kind of experiment I can do to test whether it is a server load issue?

Would the search function overload the server? I have it set to return up to 30 results now, instead of the standard 15.

It is not using FastCGI
Quote:
Hello,

Your server is currently running with SuPHP/SuEXEC. This is the default cPanel configuration. As you are using a level 5 or higher VPS, we can adjust the configuration to use FastCGI instead.

However, if all of your scripts will work with PHP 5.3, I would highly recommend upgrading to the current version, as you are currently running PHP 5.2.17. The newer versions of PHP run more quickly than 5.2 did.

If you would like us to upgrade this for you, let us know when the best time to do this would be.

We await your reply.

Sincerely,

ok I don't know how your host is setup but I do remember that if YaBB is running on a host that has PHP FastCGI running and not perl that can cores some problems with the forum but this was before I was part of the Support Team but i have not had time to test this and don't even know if that still applies to YaBB
as all I can find now is this http://www.yabbforum.com/dev/
Quote:
We will work to make YaBB play well with mod_perl and FastCGI, two modern technologies that allow Perl scripts to run at blazing speed.

and I only remember as I am working with a forum just now that was YaBB 1 gold and some of it's files went missing but I don't no if that was a FastCGI prob or if that was admin error as that forum is running on PHP 5.3.x FastCGI.
and don't even know if this is relevant to this but thought i will post it anyways.

Thanks. Looks like I'll have to find a new host again. This one is pretty expensive anyway.

That has to be a server/computer latency problem. The server isn't responding quickly enough in locking/unlocking the files it needs to write to so stuff just doesn't get properly written to the files that need to be updated.

And I would hazard a guess that it's specific to your host/server as I know other people around here have some very large and busy forums and haven't reported similar issues. (And I can, occasionally, replicate the problem by having my server CPU and ram nearly maxed out doing things in the background while working on a YaBB dev - and even then it's not consistent.)

I also have a problem where if I receive two new PMs and open them both, only one gets counted, so I get stuck with a "one new message" popup until I do forum maintenance.

Thanks Derek. I suspect that one is being handled correctly. The member has an offsite image that obviously does not exist, so YaBB is replacing it with that default one. I get the error messages clogging up the log when the missing file is on OzPolitic.

The referrer URL is also the same in each one. Maybe it's someone with an upskirt fetish.

I checked my error messages. The last 300 span just under 5 minutes (half an hour is more typical). 95% are this:

[Fri Feb 15 20:55:16 2013] [error] [client 122.108.175.170] File does not exist: /home/ozpolit/public_html/forum/avatars, referer: http://www.ozpolitic.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1197528317

They are all from the same IP address. The correct path to avatars is:

http://www.ozpolitic.com/yabbfiles/avatars/

Is this someone trying to hack my site, or slow the server down?

it is good that they are going to look at this more for you

I think I am on level 5.

http://www.hostgator.com/vps-hosting/

Hostgator is offering to help more with this, but I think they need some specific guidance on what to look at.
