As Bill pointed out - that's the way it is.

(And in some forum software, there's no way to bookmark a single post as they don't use any individual post anchors on the page.)

I'm with you on that. Smiley

What I've determined is that you and I aren't doing anything wrong per se because this is evidently a browser issue.

Specifics regarding anchors (at least for me in our forum):

Chrome and Safari work just fine. Even with an anchor, our favicon.ico appears each and every time in both browsers.

Firefox works fine except when an anchor is used, in which case our favicon.ico does not appear.

Internet Explorer only displays its own favicon.ico - ours never appears. It should be noted, however, in Carsten's forum his favicon does appear; including the address bar! Plus, his also appears even when an anchor is used. I'm amazed!

My gut is telling me there's a cache issue of some kind on my end that's causing problems with the various browsers rather than the browsers themselves.

Still, I prefer to blame the browsers. Cheesy

Re: Where to put the link to favicon?
My icon now also appears with anchors because I put it into the root folder of the domain. But that's only working if all sites of a domain use the same icon.

Re: Where to put the link to favicon?
Good to know.

I wonder if different sites on the same domain can use different favicons if they're all put in the root folder?

In other words:

Site 1 could use favicon.ico - site 2 could use favicon2.ico - site 3 could use favicon3.ico - and so on, and so forth.

Hm... never tried that. My older pojects all use the same favicon. But it would be interesting to know.

If anyone is interested there is an Add-On for Firefox that restores Favicons to the location bar in the browser.

That favicon address bar restorer worked perfectly Smiley

Re: Where to put the link to favicon?
"In theory" only - a 'host' only has one favicon and it is always in the root of the web.  That's the only place bots and browsers look for it.  In this case the term 'host' is in the true server/subdomain sense.

www.myhosty.com
trust.myhosty.com
portal.myhosty.com

are all hostnames (Linux speak) on the same domain.

Those could be vhosts (Apache)  or virtual webservers (IIS) on the same physical server OR be totally separate machines - that all comes down to DNS resolution.

But most browsers will also look for a
Code Select All
<link rel="icon" type="image/gif" href="favicon.gif" />

line in an html page to see if the favicon should be something different than favicon.ico.
