In the 3.0 beta version of YaBB (which runs here @yabbforum.com and will soon be replaced) there is an Admin position of 'YaBB Moderator'.

This 'position' would work under Admin Edits, and be in the same class of user as Admins and Global Moderators.  Note the word 'would'.  In this software version, the implementation of that idea is non-functional.  'YaBB Moderator' does not appear in the drop-down box of Positions in UCP > Admin Edit.  So we don't know how it was planned or the stage they were at in code development.  Presumably, it would be an "All Boards" - 'Moderator-only' position unlike the "Global Moderator' who is currently a down-sized YaBB Administrator (only one or two Admin functions cannot be delegated to a GM -- and maybe those need an update also).

Here's the question:

What 'powers' should be extended to a 'super-moderator'?

What privileges should he/she have with Member Data etc?

What restricted areas/tools might they need (say in the Admin Center)?

When you are thinking about this, you should refer to the 2.5.4 Alpha software and read Dandello's To-do list to see what new features might come into play...

OTAY - I has setted the agender for ya... Grin

Good Luck and thanks for your support of YaBB

Carsten set me right on the whole 'YaBB Moderator' thing - it's actually what the rest of us call 'Board Moderator' or just 'Moderator'. It's not in the drop-down because it's a 'soft' position.

So the 'Super Moderator' will be an actual 'non-soft' position.

At minimum, the Super Mod should have access to the member banning functions as well as being a Moderator for all boards. (2.5.4 now also has the ability to assign a member as a regular moderator to all boards in one click. When Carsten tackles a project he really tackles it.  Smiley )

I'm basing this on what other forum software has for similar positions - I'm a moderator on one forum where, although I've been assigned a couple boards to keep an eye on I have full moderator status on every board except for the staff specific ones. I also have access to the user banning, access to staff only discussion areas and staff only email group choices. And no access whatsoever to anything else Admin related - no ability to edit user accounts or make any changes to the functioning of the forum.

So I think that's a good place to start.

The 'position' based moderator should have access to inline IP info and e-mail data.  It would be extra-cool if we could give admins, GM, and YaBB Moderators the e-mail addy of the poster in-line as well.

I agree that it should be 'all-moderation' and preferably done in the posts/topic index.  Wink

Have to look at the inline email address thing for admins and Gmods. I know as an admin I can get it.

Thinking out loud  Roll Eyes

Tools; I lack confidence when deleting spam. Just not enough checkable information, I would feel better doing an email, IP and username check on stop forum spam.

Clarification on just what is allowed, as an example the professor dad and his Africa posts in the correct forum. No harm done but also not a regular poster, if you want to post at least use our software.

No real requirement to have access to the admin center and members who are abusive should be locked out for a day until someone higher can make a decision on a way forward.

Also; best way forward to clean / keep clean the memberlist  Wink

We have the 'Mid Moderator" working on 2.5.4.
This is an assignable position like Global Moderator.
The position has full moderator status on all boards.
Has access to the member timed ban functions.
Can access IPLookup (this may be overkill.)
Has NO access to the Admin edit sections of Member profiles.
Has NO access to the Admin center.

(And the name needed to be something that would alphabetize properly with the other positions in a sort.)

(This pretty closely matches what general moderators can do over on TAZ. We're actually a pretty powerful bunch.  Roll Eyes )

I think this will work.

At some time in the future, we may look at admin creatable Staff positions that can have some assignable gmod-type functions.

Super moderator conjures up thoughts of some superiority.   Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Maybe Administrator Assistant would be better.  Tongue

These thoughts are as much for this board or if I had such a position on my own forum.

I do not think that a super moderator should have access to any admin functions to change any settings for the forum.  Of course this could change depending also on what the Admin wishes to abdicate.

Should have full access to manage all functions of the postings on the boards. Delete, move, censor, split etc.

Access to members profile to modify where necessary and/or if requested or to assist members with registration.

Access to immediately ban spammers (I recall deleting spam with the spammer two posts ahead of me on this forum  Smiley ).  Member warnings and bannings are possibly something to be done in consultation with the full Admin however access to temporarily ban/stop immediately for the good of the whole board should a member turn rogue.

Possibly others but at the end of the day the position overall is a bit like a psycologist - looking after the well being of members and the forum.  Cool

My thoughts!!!!!!

As an admin you can name the public title whatever you want - I have one forum were the admin has the title of 'Chair', the global mod position is called 'Board Member' and the the Moderators are called 'Staff'. The hash keys for the group are still 'Administrator', 'Global Moderator' and "Moderator' in Settings.pl. There's just a new group key now called 'Mid Moderator' to make the data work.

Having the admin decide to allow the 'Mid Mod' access to the admin edit sections if the member Profiles should be doable.

If the StopForumSpam Mod makes it into 2.6 then I'm going to add a feature to check IPs against the SFS database from the IP Lookup page, and also IP, Email and Username from the member profile page.

That sounds to me like a good enough reason to put it into 2.6  Grin
