Hm, but I don't have the time I had once anymore. When I started with YaBB I was unemployed and had much time. I spent whole nights with my YaBB, that's why it looks like it does now.

Years ago I tested very much and also did many mods although I'm not a coder - but I can understand and transform existing code. I have more than 800 posts at boardmod.org... good old times.

The thing is, since Corey delegated his leadership, YaBB is pretty much primarily operated by JonB, and you're pretty much the only developer who has any real control over how YaBB is developed. That's the perception, and evidently the way it actually is.

On the flip side, without you, it's not likely YaBB's further development would be happening at all.

It would be great to have more coders and more testers. Unfortunately, they haven't yet appeared - although Carsten has been a champ at helping out with 2.5/2.5.2 mods that have been things we wanted/needed for YaBB's future development. And Derek is one of the best coders I've met.

I stand corrected. I had remembered Derek Barnstorm coded this for YaBB ... should have mentioned him; my bad. Embarrassed

With human nature as it is, this would normally be a very bad idea with a truly open source project for only a couple of people to be in control because either one of you could easily do things in your own best interest versus that of the YaBB community's varying interests at large.

There was a time in the beginning of YaBB's team when you and the others got a bit carried away by the worst of human nature. Heavy censorship was the least of the problems that went on. This forum became unrecognizable as it had stopped being a chat and support community.

At one point I thought Corey would have to step in to get things back on track, as he stated he would if he needed to, but he wisely allowed "the gang of 4" to correct what was going wrong on their own (as YaBB's team came to be known).

It was a very ugly time for YaBB. Things went badly very quickly, and with unbelievably adverse results.

Thankfully, however it happened, you and the rest of YaBB's team got it together, and once again began working in the best interests of YaBB's community at large; that versus taking over YaBB in the strictest of ways.

In any case, proof of how badly or well YaBB is doing is in our collective posts (censored or otherwise left intact), and in the way you and your team work together to move things along.

At this time from my perspective, despite some recent criticism from a YaBB legend about YaBB's current development, I think you and YaBB's team are doing an outstanding job, which in turn is keeping me very excited about YaBB's future.

I got off-topic here because the conversation moved things in a different direction, so please feel free to move this post to a more appropriate area; just please don't delete it as that's what has previously happened to a number of my posts.

I wonder why all boards have those massive bot problems. I block most bots with The Guardian and as far as I can tell there are hardly any bots left that even COULD try to register. And the ones not blocked by The Guardian never managed to register, although my captcha is no barrier for them. As I said, in 8,5 years not one single bot managed to register. And my Silent Hill Forum is rather popular.

I had forgotten that you know your YaBB forum very, very well. In that case ...

If you ever want to fool around with it, you can always edit your own files to implement this very effective captcha modification (check out how to do it here).

Dandello decided to include ggn's anti-spam hack as an admin option in the latest version of YaBB; yet another tool available for admins.

Hehe, just like me and YaBB 1 - I modded it so heavily over the years, if something goes wrong or I want to add something, I'll find the correct file and code within 1 minute most of the time.

Well, I'll leave the captcha as it is 'cause it's hardcoded. Even if bots can read it, they can't register, so there's no need for me to change, remove or improve it.

I know, I was talking about the captcha from my Y1 (link above).

The captcha as you have it in your forum can be easily defeated just as Dandello describes.

However, you can make edits to your captcha just as Dandello has done it in her test bed forum. I didn't provide a direct link to her registration pages because access isn't allowed from an outside domain. You can see her captcha modification on the 2nd page of the registration process.

By the way, one of the cool things about Dandello's test bed forums is that they showcase YaBB so wonderfully. Even as she tests them for bugs; whatever; she's so proficient with how YaBB works, there isn't a problem that comes up she can't solve.

I like checking out her test bed forums just to see how things are supposed to be done. It's very helpful.

The standard captcha is pretty useless - but SpamFruits and anti-spam question both work exceptionally well - especially if you're careful in creating your custom questions and answers (the spammers know the answers to the standard ones.)

So this means I could also deactivate the captcha and it won't make any difference (besides that humans can register easier  Grin ).

Nope - they have OCR. What they can't do is identify things in graphics outside the form (which is why using anti-spam question and asking questions about a logo or graphic works), read instructions and modify their behavior (which is why ggn's captcha hack works), or make a choice that requires a mouse-move (SpamFruits).

I know that many captchas can be read by bots. But if I remember right the captcha on my board is generated pixel by pixel - doesn't that make it harder for the bots to read it?
