Where is admin.dat located?

Admin.dat is located in the Members directory, and Dandello is correct. The 1st line in that file is the password. Because it's not encrypted, you don't have to change it. Just use it.

Gold uses .dat for the member files. The 2* versions of YaBB use .vars files. They are not interchangeable which is why there is a Conversion script for them.

I must have gotten lucky when I upgraded our Gold forum to 2.4 a couple of years ago. Basically what I did was to install a fresh 2.4 forum with just me as a member (admin), and then I copied our members and messages data into the 2.4 folders. It worked. Go figure.

That's how I remembered doing it. But if the data really isn't interchangeable, or at least transferable, my memory must be failing me.

Bottom line: Go with what Dandello says. She'll definitely know better about this stuff. Surely, I must have run the conversion script.

Edited:
Dandello is right again.

Chances are, Bill, you followed the 2.4 Quick-Guide ...

Now that I'm thinking more clearly, yes, with a couple of variations that are irrelevant, I believe that's pretty much what I did.

No wonder it worked!  Roll Eyes

I've never run Gold, but I'm pretty good with 2.5+. Chances are, Bill, you followed the 2.4 Quick-Guide, put all your old member files, boards, variables and messages into their Convert folders and since your forum was working before starting the upgrade and you probably didn't have a whole lot of modifications going, running Convert.pl went fast and worked without any hitches - which is how it's supposed to work.  Wink

You're right. That's pretty much what I did, and at the time I had no modifications in our forum.

What should I do if I can't open this member directory? I already renamed it memberX and created a new member directory and this morning see there are 400 accounts created. There must be some robot creating these records which is why I need to upgrade. Not sure how it's happening.

Can I just create an admin.dat and put my password in?

644 is the normal default, but depending on the server it may need to be 655. The bogus registrations are spammers. I don't know if Gold allows you to disable registration.

OK it's working better now. I put it in maintenance mode and now am trying to do the maintenance but it seems the URL doesn't completely load. It starts and then stays there and eventually gives an error. I've tried the 4 repair options like repair board, rebuild member list, recount member etc but they all have the same result.

OK for some reason, it's all working now. Now onto the upgrade. I've got 2.52 already so just need to follow this?

Spoke too soon. cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.pl?board=&action=repairboards is not working or it takes a very long time. What could be causing that? Everything else worked. Do I need to do that repair before doing the upgrade?

BTW, since I deleted all of the members, since I can't tell the difference between the real ones and the spam ones, how will the old posts appear? Will it have the members name?

Did Convert.pl run into any problems?

Poster names are also stored in the thread, so the old deleted members should appear as 'name (ex-member)'
