Migrating from YABB 1 Gold

I have a YaBB 1 Gold installation that has some problems but nothing too serious. I would like to upgrade  it to the latest version. How can I do that without losing the forum posts? The server is at DreamHost.com

Not sure what they use but I can check if necessary.

We've had users successfully move from Gold to 2.5.2. Just make sure your old forum is actually working before you try to upgrade. Upgrading won't fix corrupted member files or posts. (And always make sure you have a good backup before you make any major changes.)

OK I"m going to start it now. I'm not sure how much is wrong with it but it's been unused for a couple of years because of some problems. You can see it here.

http://vivendodaluz.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.pl

I think it has some folder permission problems.

We've got some experienced installer people here if you need help.  Smiley

And I do see what may be part of the problem - my browser converts 'Coletāneas' to 'Colet%E2neas' - so there may be a character encoding issue.

Thanks Smiley I might need that!

So step one would be to check all the permissions?

I know how to change permissions but where can I find a list of what the permissions should be?

2.5.2 has a Quick-Guide with the permissions listed. In a nutshell - all folders (including the folders inside of folders) should be set to 755. All files should be set to 644 except YaBB.pl, AdminIndex.pl  and Sources/SpellChecker.pl - those three must be set to 755. Also, those three files must be checked to make sure they have the proper address for the Perl installation on the server. (Called a 'shebang')

If you find you need to set any of the permissions to 777 or 666 to get them to work, the server your site is on has some configuration issues which can lead to security issues.

Also, when getting 2.5.2 make sure you have a newest build which is at http://yabb.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/yabb/branches/2.5.2/?view=tar This is a 'tar' instead of a zip.

Should I fix the folder permissions first before upgrading to 2.5.2?

And if yes then can I use the instructions for 2.5.2 to fix any permissions problems?

As I indicated - make sure your old forum is working before you upgrade. The permissions given in the Quick-Guide should work for Gold as well.

As basic rule of thumb - if it has a shebang (path to perl) as the very first line in the file, then it needs to be 755 or higher. If it doesn't, it should be 644 (or higher, depending on the server.)

OK I fixed many permissions. Had 775 where it shoudl have been 755 and have some 777 and 666 as well. It looks to be working but I can't register a new user. It says it sent the email but I don't receive the email. What can I do to fix that?

The not being able to register a new member using the Add New Member window is different than not getting notices that someone has registered and is awaiting approval.

For emails, make sure the admin's email address is correct and make sure you have 'Notification e-mail for new member?' turned on in Advanced Settings -> Email.

If no emails are going out, then you'll need to make sure your STMP authorizations are correct -   you may also need to experiment with which email protocol works best for you. Sendmail isn't always in 'usr/sbin' for instance.

Since I deleted all the users, how would I create my admin account? My board ended up getting spammed and 100,000 bogus accounts created. Since the site has been offline for a few years, I'm not worried about deleting all the user accounts.

In the 2.5.2 zip/tar there should be 12 default files in the yabb2/Members folder - admin.vars, memberlist.txt. memberinfo.txt and others. Copy those into your on-line yabb2/Members directory.

The login and password will be the same as what you used to run Setup. Log in, change your password and fill in the rest of your information in your Profile.

This is still version 1. I was fixing the permissions before upgrading to 2.5.2. How can I find out my log in if I forgot it? It's been a few years since I touched this forum. Or can I just go ahead and upgrade first?

I admit that I don't know enough about Gold to tell you definitively how to manually change the administrator password.

But if I read the code correctly in the Gold LogInOut.pl, the first line in admin.dat should be the password. And nothing jumps out at me concerning an encryption process.

Where is admin.dat located? I did a search on it in my Gold and 2.5.2 but can't find it.
