Thanks Dandello.

Since I require members use only their full name on my forum it makes sense to only allow only upper and lower case letters while registering. I'm also thinking this might be another way to thwart spammers.

I tired to edit the code today and was only successful in crashing my test forum.

I beleive I need to change section
Code (Perl)
Select All
	&fatal_error("invalid_character","$register_txt{'35'} $register_txt{'241re'}") if $member{'regusername'} =~ /[^\w\+\-\.\@]/;
    if ( $member{'regusername'} =~ /^[0-9]+$/sm ) {
        fatal_error( 'all_numbers',
            "$register_txt{'35'} $register_txt{'241n'}" );
    }

Do I just add
Code (Perl)
Select All
\#\$\%\^\&\*

and so on after the highlighted code in the first box?

I don't think adding a period as an invalid character in a user name would hurt at all.

Dandello solved the spam-bot registration attempts with just numbers here, and I can happily confirm that it works.

Morning, noon, or night, have a great one!

would it cause a problem if  I added "." as an invalid character?

I think it may as it is used as a ip divider but Dandello will know more about it.

The integration I need to go over is for 2.5.4 where we're giving the admin the ability to ban IPs and add them the Guardian list from the error log page. The admin will also be able to see the ban_log from that page and add offending IP addresses to Guardian from there as well. But we don't want the admin to inadvertently add the same IP to the Guardian list multiple times.

Excellent!

BanMember isn't automatic at all.

I noticed IPs are automatically being added in BanMembers. I'm guess its coming from the Email and Username banning.

BanMembers and Guardian have slightly different functions (well, more than slightly, actually). Guardian (when activated) will write to the .htaccess file and its own log in Settings.pl and generally catches IP addresses where bad things came from (like bogus stuff in query strings). BanMembers writes to one of 3 different lists in Settings.pl, depending on how that member was banned by the admin (user name, email address or IP.). Guardian is pretty much automatic (although the admin can add and remove things from Guardian's lists). BanMember isn't automatic at all. Guardian keeps the offending IPs from accessing the site on the server level. BanMember keeps the offending member/IP from being anything but a Guest, but they still can be a Guest.

The integration I need to go over is for 2.5.4 where we're giving the admin the ability to ban IPs and add them the Guardian list from the error log page. The admin will also be able to see the ban_log from that page and add offending IP addresses to Guardian from there as well. That's a possibility if you were using your old .htaccess file or old ban_log files on the new install.

That's exactly what I did when the old forum crashed. I was trying to get it back up as quickly as possible.

Which reminds me - I still have some work to do on Guardian/Ban/Error log integration for 2.5.4

I wish I could help but I'm not that great at coding.

I noticed a few things that I'm curious about.

I see IPs listed in the Ban Members page and the Guardian page. Do both read/write to the same file?

From what it looks like the Ban_Members writes to Settings.pl and the Guardian writes to .htaccess. Why the duplication?

Also, there isn't a way to access the Variables/ban_log.txt from the admin center (to be honest I'm not really sure of its value since its not there). It might be nice to have it in there to edit or clear if that does disrupt something I'm not aware of. (it looks like Ban_Members and Errors page might read this file)

That's a possibility if you were using your old .htaccess file or old ban_log files on the new install. Guardian wouldn't know what was already there and so just added to it - but those old blocked IPs should still have been blocked.

(Which reminds me - I still have some work to do on Guardian/Ban/Error log integration for 2.5.4  Shocked )

Looks good so far - no repeat entries in .htaccess.

I wonder if its like the help files where I had to re-save in order for the files to show up?

If it turns out I'm right and your spammers are trying to use all number user names and you need to have Encrypt ID turned on, the fix is:

In case any of you missed the first part of this discussion, and as a reference to those of you who are getting errors because of spam-bots that use "all number user names" as Dandello mentions above, as I confirmed here in my post following hers, she's correct about how to take care of this problem.

Just follow her instructions here, and you'll be good to go. Cool

So far Guardian added about 30 IPs and no doubles so far. I did get a .pre error and it didn't take down the forum.

The ban_log in Variables lists attempts from banned IPs to access the forum. But if .htaccess in YaBB's 'root' has those IPs already blocked, YaBB shouldn't be registering the attempt as it should have been blocked before reaching YaBB.pl.

So based on your description, .htaccess is being written to but the server isn't using it to block access. And that is a server issue.

(And I also suspect a server issue as - in theory - the Guardian IP blocks  in .htaccess shouldn't have allowed for multiple copies of the same IP address in the .htaccess because those IPs shouldn't have been able to reach YaBB to trigger Guardian into adding them after they were added the first time.)

My thinking as well.

I had to stop Guardian from adding IPs because the file was growing way to big. There is a .htaccess in the YaBB folder and one in the YaBB/Variables folder.  If I remember correctly it was the .htaccess in YaBB/Variables that the Guardian was adding the IPs. I'm going to turn it back on again and see what happens.

Edited:
The Guardian is writing to the .htaccess in the Yabb folder. Its the ban_log.txt in the YaBB/Variables folder thats getting written to there

At this point, an issue with the host/server is not outside the realm of possibility.

I know when I go to my host provider I'm going to get "Its the software's fault", at least the was the response I got from them last month when I approached them about this issue.
