Well I see an awful lot of
Quote:
The Verification code was not the same as the image presented on screen, please go back, refresh (hit F5 on most browsers) and try again.

But I just got this error message
Quote:
Unable to open ./Members/n_Layman.pre
Verbose: No such file or directory

The person that got the error matches his name with the first two characters cut off (Len) (he is a Good guy)

Not for you and me just yet, but I believe letters can be randomized (or easily changed) while using the mod version of ggn's CAPTCHA hack (as Dandello has it installed in her test bed forum). With ggn's happy approval, Derek Barnstorm authored his CAPTCHA hack into a mod that will be part of YaBB's next release.

Meanwhile, as needed, those of us using this hack can change those letters as we want. Surprisingly, the good news is that I haven't needed to change any of the letters in over 2 years of using it. But at least I can if I need to make that change.

That's how I did it when I upgraded from the Gold 1.3.1 version I previously used to the 2.4 version I use now.

But I think there may be another step needed to make that compatible. I've since forgotten.

I guess I can install in a separate directory to test it (yabb2-5) and change the directory's name (back to yabb2) once I know it works? I figure I'll have to change the file location in Paths.pl.

Then I just move the members and message directories?

Does that make sense?

yes unfortunately spammers just like junk mail are now just a part of life as there will always be someone ready to pay a spammer to put links to there website as a valid form of advertising and no matter how many spammers are taking down one more will just fill that spot the best way to fix it is to take down the chain of supply and demand with no supply there is no demand how to do this is every time a spammer posts a link to a website take that website offline every time a spammer posts business advertising that business is a fine or a penalty for 10,000 for every for each and every one so if there are two then that will be 20,000  Wink

I noticed that started happening sometime last year not long after I had temporarily stopped using the CAPTCHA hack. I wanted to only use Spamfruits to see what might happen. But just like spam-bot automation had figured out a way to defeat regular CAPTCHA, it also figured out how to get past Spamfruits.

When I once again implemented ggn's anti-spam CAPTCHA hack, spam-bots were stopped cold.

I still use Spamfruits because it continues to stop a lot of spam-bots. Plus, I like the way it looks.

Happily, as I've mentioned before, ggn's anti-spam CAPTCHA hack allows for open registration without approvals, and it allows for guest posting as well.

Morning, noon, or night, have a great one!

I've been thinking along those lines as a last resort

If you have under a dozen or so real people wanting to register in your forum on any given day, another effective alternative is to replace YaBB's default registration in favor of your own Register menu icon.

In doing so, after disabling YaBB's default registration, which will take away the Register menu tab, anyone clicking the Register menu tab you'll subsequently create will be redirected to a post in your forum that includes your email address, and simple instructions asking them to send you their chosen user ID and chosen displayed name.

In turn, you'll register that new member yourself, and provide them with a temporary password with instructions for them to change it to a password of their choice after they've logged in to their account.

But again, implementing ggn's anti-spam CAPTCHA hack should solve your problems if you want to give it a try. If you don't like using that registration method, you can always go back to what you have now.

Morning, noon, or night, have a great one!

Bill is right - 2.5.2 is the most current 'official' version available. 2.5.4 is still in development and is very unstable at the moment.

2.5.2 is actually pretty stable if you add the various bug-fixes which take care of some glitches that crept in and some old bugs that weren't uncovered until it went the 'live' testing.

Edited:
And I should add - when I say strict I don't mean to have everything turned off - I'm merely referring to not allowing much interaction between YaBB and the rest of the world except when it comes through 'proper' channels - the program hosted on my domain.

Whatever is working for you, that's the way to continue. Cool

As for future upgrades, Dandello is the go to person for that.

Like our forum, you're using the 2.4 version. YaBB 2.5.2 is the latest release, but I wouldn't recommend upgrading until the one after that (currently 2.5.4 although that may change to version 2.6 at some point... not sure how that works).

Bill

I've always only had 4 or five boxes checked.

To be honest I have no clue what most of them do and I could never find any reference to what they are for. Only a few of them are self evident by their name. So in my ignorance I didn't allow very many. I have a very active forum so it seems it didn't hurt.

ggn's anti-spam CAPTCHA looks like you delete the first and last two characters. I can see where that would confuse some of the people that join my forum  Cheesy But that's another story for another thread.

Thanks for the input.

Edited:
I just notice Dandello test forum is running 2.5.4. I'm considering upgrading, should I wait for the new release? I really nervous about doing this in the first place then finding out that there is a new version right around the corner

Admittedly, this is a safe way to operate a forum. Still ...

Dandello is most certainly an expert on how YaBB operates. However, I respectfully disagree have a different opinion than she has on this one because I know what's working in our forum.

I've seen YaBB forums be so restrictive with the way they use Referrer Security that those forums become very user unfriendly. Particularly when a forum doesn't have an easy way to send a message to its administrator or to the site's webmaster, and a great many forums do not provide this, it's not likely that problems will be reported. People will simply stay away.

Hint: The better your forum is at stopping spam-bots, the more generous you can be in allowing actions from outside domains.

Particularly with the use of ggn's anti-spam CAPTCHA hack, Referral Security Checking is no longer necessary despite what "experts" will tell you (you can read more about that here). I've disabled it entirely in our forum without any problems.

Keep in mind that I'm not a YaBB expert, just a regular admin with a fair knowledge of how YaBB works, and yet, the forum I operate no longer has problems with spam-bots. So if I can do this, pretty much anybody can.

If you've noticed, there seem to be quite a few YaBB forums that have registration disabled (registration is processed via email). You could do that, too, but how restrictive do you really want to be?

Edited:
You can see how this anti-spam CAPTCHA works in Dandello's YaBB 2.5.4 Alpha test bed forum (on the 2nd page of her registration form). Thankfully, she's included this as a mod in YaBB's next, and newest version, of which she's the lead developer (this mod has been authored/updated by Derek Barnstorm with ggn's happy approval).
