that is good  Smiley

if it did happen when you upgraded the error was in the old forum as well.

so if you like 2.5.2 just now we are working on 2.5.4 so you will love that it has many enhancements and new features and my testing so far shows good speed improvements but this is only in a test environment so should also show some speed improvements on normal hosting.

Eric, thank you very much for following up on how your problem was finally fixed. For people upgrading from a much earlier version of YaBB, this discussion may be particularly helpful. It certainly helped me to understand this better.

Morning, noon, or night, have a great one!

I think I have fixed it

forum.totals
forum.master
forum.control

All needed amending. Many thanks for the help.  Having those file examples really helps.

My guess is that my problem arose when I upgraded from 1.3.1 to 2.5.2 on 5th June 2013.  I'd been using 1.3.1 for many years with no problem and just thought that upgrading might speed things up a bit.  Amazing all the new features and a lot to learn and mods to re-apply !.

Thanks to all again.
Best regards, Eric.

ok put your forum into Maintenance Mode

then download forum.master, forum.control, forum.totals keep a backup of them then make edits to the file

a good forum.master:
Code

if you cross reference forum.master with forum.control you can work out what forum.master should have in it e.g.

forum.master:
Code
Select All
$cat{'general'} = qq~general,test~;

forum.control:

Select All
general|test||Test the forum out here. Posts made in this board will not add to your post count.|admin|||||1||||1|||

There was no duplication in the individual 802.txt board file.

I have found some anomaly in my forum.totals file, but it may have nothing to do with the symptom. Doing "Recount Board Totals" does not fix this.

In my forum.totals file all the boards are listed twice, in a top block and bottom block and not in the same order, see http://www.satsig.net/forum.totals-forum.master.txt (I've added .txt to make it easier to display)
EXCEPT
recycle and announcements, listed once each, in the middle.
any1, listed 3 times, twice in lower block.
jobs, listed once only in top block

Is it safe to edit this file manually and clean it up, with each board listed once only ?

In forum.master there appear to be anomalies near the top:

$cat{'"anything1'} = qq~~;
$cat{'anything1'} = qq~802,any1,transponder,jobs~;
$cat{'dish'} = qq~linkstar,direcway,idirect,gilat,point,Forsale,dish~;
$cat{'general_cat'} = qq~ivsat-us,wildblue,ivsat-af,ivsat-eu,hylas,tooway,ivsat-me,ivsat-asia,mm,802~;

$cat{'staff'} = qq~announcements,recycle~;

The line:  $cat{'"anything1'} = qq~~; may be spurious ?

Also, perhaps most significantly, 802 appears in both anything1 AND general_cat

I've just I put a new thread into board 802 and the looked at 'recent'.  The new thread appears twice in the "recent" listing.  So the problem is associated with the whole board, not the individual message!

Another thing I have just noticed.  The Wireless board (name=802) appears twice on the forum home page screen, http://www.satsig.net/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl,  in two different categories.  I guess it must have been there since I upgraded from 1.3.1 to 2.5.2 on 5th June!.

Best regards, Eric.

Look at the board file that topic's in. Bet there's two entries for one topic.

Yes, I tried all the maintenance functions, and after each one had a look to see it the symptom was still there.
No change.

The identical pair are slowly working their way down the 'recent' listing, now in positions 6 and 7.

Is there anything worth examining, like the txt and ctb files ?

Have you tried running the Board/Message maintenance tools in the admin center?

I deleted the second reply, which brought the pair to the top, and it made no difference.  The pair still appears, but now lower down in the 'recent' listing.

I wonder if the first reply is the problem:
  The time of posting was 23:59.
  This was first post by a new member.
  His registration process had not gone smoothly.
  The second message originally had a quote of the first message incorporated. While the quote was visible the problem was first noticed. I then deleted the unnecessary quote that he had incorporated in his message, but this did not get rid of the anomaly.

I've left the anomaly there to see if it reoccurs.

Best regards, Eric.

I see that, too. I'm just a regular YaBB user, so I don't have the kind of expertise that YaBB's staff have, so one of them will probably be online in a timely fashion to help you out.

Meanwhile, I wonder what would happen if you delete that particular post, and then post it again as a fresh new post? Maybe you can copy and paste it so that you don't have to type it all out again.

It's probably worth a try, right? After all, it is your post. Wink

Edited:
Okay, I see that he deleted his post, but in the process another person's earlier post was duplicated in the forum's listing of most recent posts.

So there is a glitch of some kind that hopefully one of you YaBB staffers can suggest a fix for him. But at least, as it seems, only one post at a time ever gets duplicated in that list.

Thanks for looking at the anomaly.
I've posted a new message elsewhere.
The pair move together down the recent listing.
If you add another reply to the thread the pair will move back up the top.
Strange.
Best regards, Eric.

I see what you mean. As I see it now, the duplicate listing is happening with your most recent post.

Is this happening with every "most recent post" that is made? In other words, what wil happen when a new post is made now? Hopefully, this is just a temporary glitch.

Thread appearing twice in recent listing

I've suddenly seen a particular thread appearing twice in the recent listings.
Both appear refer to the same message exactly and only one message shows in the board listing.
Ref:
satsig . net / cgi-bin / yabb / YaBB.pl

Any ideas where to investigate or what might have happened ?

Best regards, Eric.
