Found out why my old forum crashed

Back a few days ago I reported that my old forum crashed
http://www.yabbforum.com/community/YaBB.pl?num=1370732865/77#77

Today I found out why.

The problem was the .htaccess file in the yabb folder. I renamed the file and the forum came back online.

Sometimes fixes can be so simple but such a pain to find.

Been there; done that. Roll Eyes

And not that long ago. In fact, when our 2.4 forum all of a sudden started to get a 500 error ...

OH MY GOSH and WHOOPS!

What I ended up doing was to delete the .htaccess file in YaBB's main directory (I should have saved it first to see how I messed things up). That worked!

So to any of you who are messing around with The Guardian™ just because you want to test stuff out, please be careful!

But at least if you goof up like I did, you'll know what to do. Roll Eyes

Thankfully, that 500 error only lasted a very short time. Maybe a minute or so before I luckily figured it out.

Yea, I've had that happen myself a few times. Play around with something and break things. Dig around for over an hour and finally figure out it was something simply over looked. Then find myself thinking how did I miss that?

My site's Message Board is hosted on Fasthosts in the UK. Recently, the server on which my site is hosted suffered a DDoS attack and the Fasthosts response was to install a 'scrubber' server in front of the hosting server. This resulted in every visit to my site appearing to emanate from '10.x.y.z', which was ostensibly itself. It didn't take long before a malevolent visit to my message board caused the YaBB scripts to log the 'originating' IP address in the .htaccess file, immediately causing a 500 error as EVERY visitor was deemed to be from that IP address. Through FTP (unaffected) I removed the 10.x.y.z address from the .htaccess file and the message board came back to life. Fortunately, I only had to carry out that action once more before Fasthosts removed the cause of my problem and life went back to normal! Smiley

Nice forum you have there. I noticed right away that members on your board use their real names, mine does too.
