One also has to know how the 'meta-data' works for each forum type, LOL

That's a pretty formidable challenge.  You have to reverse engineer everything. If you haven't done system-to-system data conversion work before, you have no idea of the complexity.

Even SMF would be a big go, as they have left behind the 1.6 data format, so any newer SMF boards would need a different conversion.

I think we need to concentrate on making our product the best it can be and getting to full UTF-8 and the 2.8 milestome. THAT IS A LOT!

The we can tackle building a trans-literator for ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8 for non-latinate character sets.

Then we can tackle mySQL

Never mind the dozens of features I (and others I ams ure) have on notepads

...

(spoken like a 'boss' as we would say ATM in the U.S., LOL)

Cheesy

All a converter needs to do is convert the mySQL data. The back end mechanics will be totally incompatible (simply because those forums are all php based and YaBB isn't. So templates won't convert. BUT the important things - messages, board layout, and members, should be convertable with some work. (They all need to use the the same data, just in different arrangenments and orders.)

OK I have to say one thing -

PLEASE DON'T DUPLICATE POSTS ACROSS BOARDS

here is what I said on the Beta Forum -

That would be a huge undertaking, and best be suited to when we are 100% UTF-8.

We would also need at least one developer just to work on that.

BUT - I admire your enthusiasm.

(I do have resources for new challenges, but we have to get through the beat and get stable before we shift focus.)

The NEXT issues are 'YaBB Admin Center News', the future of BoardMod and our new CMS for yabbforum.  OH, and a replacement for the 'also crappity smacked up Codex'.

PLENTY to work on there

Wink

Looks like it is still attached here in this post.

Edited:
One thing that would have to be kept in mind is if it were to somehow work, it would probably have to be used on something pre 2.5.4 since I think that's when the file extensions were changed. Then a upgrade to 2.6 may be possible. But, this is jumping in thinking that it is at all possible.

I may try it out later on with a 2.4 board since I think that was the current version when this was posted.

Whoops! It appears that it has been deleted. I was going to play with it.

It's awfully old, so no guarantees. But it IS something to look into.

SMF have their converter from YaBB to SMF. Can something be done to convert from SMF to YaBB. ~ That would be soooo good. Particularly that now 2.6 is in full swing!!!..
