There're lots and lots of companies using XP that simply cannot move to Win7 because the drivers for their non-standard computer controled devices do not exist or the devices need 16bit/non-USB/non-supported  by Win7 output.

At work I still use programs that will not run on 64bit Windows7 and I have found that XP-Mode fits the bill nicely. Its a free download from Microsoft.

I have two 8-bit programs (one written in gbasic that is used for estimating) that works great in XP-Mode.

I have a really old Laptop running Win 98 in my woodshop with a program that I use when I need to figure out tricky cuts and angles. Its an IBM ThinkPad and the case is metal.

I think I may have initially disliked all new versions before I ended up liking them

I remember hating XP when it first came and waited a couple of years until the drivers I needed came out. I have Vista running for a month when I finally gave up and installed XP-Pro. I serious doubt I'll move to Win8 and will wait to see what Win9 looks like before I make judgement.

It seems that lately (or not so lately) that very other version on Windows fails

2 of the 12 computers I watch over run XP

Today I decided to check to see if Microsoft Security Essentials is still working and if the definitions are up to date.

Well it is

Only until you update manually your XP OS (which includes Security Essentials). You will be able to download any existing updates to-date not yet updated in your PCs but thereafter no more updates..... Cry Cry Cry

If you keep it off line or access the internet via a Win7 machine you'll likely be okay - plus some of the anti-virus software sites have announced they intend to keep supporting XP. The only problem I see at the moment is DST updates. (Yeah, I have DST updating on the brain at the moment.  Cheesy )

I just installed Norton 360 (its free to me) on my two remaining HexxedP boxes.

Cheesy

I did find a nice workaround for my two 'big' Windows 7 machines, I used VirtualBox and created Virtual XP machines.  Oddly, the MS built-in 'XP mode' is an FPOS - it is an awful clone of a Citrix VM, you can't get it to render 32bit color (so it was useless for my old graphics editing suites -- stuff that works PERFECTLY within VirtualBox.

just another 'fail'.

I use XP mode on a couple of Win7 boxes, it works for what I need it for, although a bit cranky sometimes. I'll have to check out VirtualBox.

The last time I used a Norton product it was a resource hog, did they fix that?

On Norton -
I agree, used to be awful.  Now is does a lot of stuff very very well, at least on all my Win 7 machines. I still have CCleaner and MalwareBytes installed, but I rarely have to use them.  On XP - It seems to be lower on resource usage than MSE. (which I was running on the XP boxes).  I used to run AVG on the XP machines, and found MSE was nearly as good and was better behaved on updates, scans etc.
