This is a function of the AJAX interface Javascript processing and HTML Page Refreshes.

Several of the issues recently reported have a common element - AJAX processing.  Dandello and I have talked about this and concluded we need to learn more about the timing model used.

We need a better team knowledge of how to perform notification in a 'basically static page' (the YaBB Template) of changes in local background processes (AJAX). Perhaps this is something we can put out a call for help on.

if you read the 'drawbacks', you will likely find limitations you are already aware of either through YaBB or using things like webmail (Yahoo or gmail etc), Facebook etc..

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

If you're logged in when Maintenance is turned on, I can understand the notification not showing at the top of the page until the page refreshes by asking for another action - but if you're logged out, you should see a maintenance notice on the login page.

If you are already logged in, I don't think there's any way to notify you until you request an action. (if you are not the admin who initiated the backup or maintenance)

I do have a question/recommendation coming up on this. I have been testing Admin Center 'stuff'  Wink

I usually see a note at the top of the 'stand alone' login box telling me the forum's in Maintenance Mode.

The first screen I see is asking me to sign in, then I'm notified that the beta forum is in maintenance mode.

Not really a bug but it might make sense if we're notified first that the forum is in maintenance mode before signing in.

To be honest this may have always been this way but since I'm an admin on my site I may have never noticed it before.
